The Agora

Greek Marketplace and Festival

The Deer Creek Middle School Agora (marketplace and festival) will be
held Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, from first through fourth hours, and celebrates
Greek influence on western civilization with voluntary student participation in
projects and games. It is a partial-day culminating activity of the sixth-
graders’ study of Chapter 8 on Ancient Greece.

The activities are held in the foyer, the Band Room, and the cafeteria. In
the past, there have been science projects ranging from sundials to catapults,
and students have performed scenes from Aesop's Fables. [A Pizza Lunch
follows, and then an all-school charity event completes the afternoon.
Students are then dismissed to the buses for Winter Break.]

This year, the "Quadrathlon" (four games) include Discus, Pankration,
Trireme Races, and "Spartan Wrestling." Students also set up food booths with
Greek-menu items including cheeses, olives, grapes, pita bread, "veggie
wedgies," meatballs, sparkling grape juice, pomegranate juice, apple juice,
hummus dip, baklava, "roasted goat" (gyros meat) and freshly-churned butter!

Crafts may include a Greek souvenir shop (maps, "chariot bumper stickers,"
and megaphones), painted pottery, and students printing their names using
the Greek Alphabet.
