Greek Marketplace and Festival
The Deer Creek Middle School Agora (marketplace and festival) was
held Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, from first through third hours, and celebrated
Greek influence on western civilization with voluntary student participation in
projects and games. It was a partial-day culminating activity of the sixth-
graders’ study of Chapter 8 on Ancient Greece.
The cafeteria served as the Stoa, with food stands featuring Greek-menu
items including cheeses, olives, fruits, pita bread and dips, meatballs,
juices, baklava, "roasted goat" (gyros meat) and freshly-churned butter.
Crafts included several jewelry and hair accessory booths, face painting, and
students getting print-outs of their names using the Greek Alphabet.
In the Theatron (Band Room), Mrs. Smith and Mr. Lemin performed scenes
from Aesop's Fables, demonstrated how to wrap a toga, and showed how to make
comedy and tragedy masks.
This year, the "Athlon" (games) included Discus and "Spartan Wrestling."
Our final WorldView meetings, a Pizza Lunch, and then an all-school
charity event completed the afternoon. Students were then dismissed to the
buses for Winter Break.
