Grading Rubric

Each homework assignment, worth up to ten points, consists of a handout with
selected vocabulary words from the chapter lesson. Students match the
provided vocabulary word with the correct definition and application.
(Students will have class-provided or textbook-provided definitions and a
variety of applications.) Students will then practice “mechanics”
(capitalization, punctuation, and spelling) by writing the correct
applications on the line provided.

To score a full 10 points:

The matches are correct, and demonstrate the students’ mastery of the
concepts. In the application sentences, there are no misspellings, and
capitalization and punctuation are correct.

To lose a full point:

The match (either definition or application) is incorrect; or the homework
is incomplete (one or more left unfinished).

To lose a half-point:

1) The match is incorrect because the student has written the correct
letter, but the incorrect application; or the student has written the
incorrect letter, but the correct application.

2) In the applications, there are 1 to 5 mechanical errors on the entire
handout. (For 6 to 10, another half-point; for 11 to 15, another half-point;
and so on.)

3) The instructions are not followed: The application sentence has not been
copied; or the student has failed to write complete information on the
header provided.

Maximum points allowed for work one day late: 5 (All above rules still
apply.)

Late Work

For work following absences: Student will have one day for each day absent.
(If work is assigned on Monday, it is due Tuesday. If the student misses
Monday and returns Tuesday, the assignment is made Tuesday and is then due
Wednesday. If the student misses Monday and Tuesday and returns Wednesday,
the work is assigned Wednesday and is due Friday.)

For late work other than for absences: If a student does not turn in an
assignment after normal procedures, they will be required, outside of normal
class time, to complete the work. All assignments will be completed - even
if they are for no credit. [ It's not about the GRADE, it's about the
LEARNING. ]

Exceptions:

If work has been completed on time but left at home, a parent or guardian
may send a written note to that effect the next day, attached to the work.
The assignment will be accepted for full credit. If work has not been
completed for other legitimate reasons, a parent or guardian may also send a
written note to that effect. The assignment will be due as soon as is
reasonably possible and will be accepted for full credit.

“REWRITE”:

The answers are illegible or show a serious lack of effort. The grade is
registered as a zero unless the student completely rewrites the assignment
and turns it in the next day. Completed work is then accepted for full
credit.
