Course Objective:
The primary objective of this course is to teach students’ effective communication
skills and critical thinking skills through writing, speaking and listening.

Language Arts Skills:
In language arts the students will work on vocabulary, spelling, figurative language,
information, learning the writing process, modes and forms of writing, grammar usage,
mechanics, oral language, listening, and speaking.
·	The students will develop and expand knowledge of words and word meanings to increase
vocabulary.
·	The students will conduct research and organize information.
·	The students will express ideas effectively in written modes for a variety of purposes
and audiences.
·	The students will use the writing process to write coherently.
·	The students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences using narrative,
descriptive, expository, persuasive and reflective modes
·	The students will demonstrate thinking skills in listening and speaking.
·	The student will listen for information and pleasure.
· The students will express ideas and opinions in small group or individual situations.
·	The students will interpret, evaluate and compose visual messages.

Vocabulary:
Vocabulary words and definitions will be copied to a study sheet on Mondays in class.
Students are to keep them in their red binder for use and review during the semester. Keep
those lists!

·	Students will copy their vocabulary words on Mondays. We will go over the Latin word
parts, the meanings of the word parts and the definitions in class together. If your child is
absent, they may find the word list and study sheet, on my website under Printable Documents.
·	It will be suggested that students study several words daily to prepare for the test on
Friday.
·	Fridays we will have a test. Students will be given the word to write. They will also
match the word to its definition.

You can find our vocabulary words, which are based on Latin/Greek word parts on my web site
under Printable Documents. These are the bases of many of our English words. Understanding
what the word parts mean will help students understand the meaning of words. These words will
help make their writing more interesting. They will also help them express themselves in a way
they might not otherwise be able to do. We will be working on these word parts and vocabulary
words each week. The word parts will also help them with comprehension and decoding words when
they are reading.

Writing:
Writing allows us to communicate with others. We can describe things we have seen,
experiences we have, even things we would like to see and do. It is also a way to express how we
feel about things. Grammar is a big part of writing. We use Hands On Grammar (HOG) to identify
parts of speech and enhance writing.

We will also be doing research and writing about what we learn. The best way to learn to write
is to do it. We will be doing just that this year in class. The format we will use for all
final copies of writing assignments will be cursive, if you choose handwriting. Papers that are
typed should be in Times New Roman, Font size 12.  The margins should be one inch on all sides;
the assignment should be double-spaced.

Classroom Expectations:
Students are expected to show respect towards their peers, their teacher, and to
themselves. Students are also expected to give their best effort.

Classroom Management:
Students will be expected to follow the correct procedures as set forth by the teacher in
class. The school wide discipline plan is adhered to when the student makes a poor choice.
School wide we use a system of “Marks” which were explained during Antler Camp at the parent
meeting.

GRADES:
The best way to make sure your child is keeping up with their assignments is to check their
grades online. Students like to do this too especially when waiting for a grade, as it will
appear online before papers are returned.

The Grading scale used by Deer Creek Middle School is Deer Creek Policy:
·	90-100 = A
·	80-89 = B
·	70-79 = C
·	60-69 = D
·	Below 60 = F

Homework Policy:
The expectation is that homework will be completed when assigned. (All assignments are due
the next day unless other wise specified.) If a student does not have his/her assignment on the
day it is due and turns it in one day late, the grade will be “grade earned” minus 11 points.
If it is two or more days late, the highest grade earned will be a 50. (If for some reason
the class does not meet the assignment is not late.)
Three chances will be given to students each semester to return to their locker to get
assignments without a penalty. After three trips to their locker to retrieve assignments, the
work will be considered late.

Make-Up Assignments:
·	The student is responsible for obtaining make-up assignments when absent. Assignments
will be posted on the assignment board and website. I have provided a folder of missed work
available for students to pick up when they return to class. It is their responsibility to get
make-up work turned in within two days (see your handbook). If they need additional information
about the assignments see me at a time when it is mutually convenient. I will schedule times to
help each student in any way possible.
·	LONG ILLNESSES ARE AN EXCEPTION
·	Talking during tests = zero

Course Goals:
·	To instill in all students an appreciation of literature of all kinds.
·	To have all students reading on grade level or above.
·	To have students become life long readers for recreation as well as information.

Reading Program:
Research shows that each student should be reading every day to improve reading ability.
Sixth graders make gains in reading through sustained silent reading, reading aloud, and through
teacher directed reading lessons. Because of this, I insist that students bring a library book
to class every day. I will conference with each student in order to make sure they are working
toward their potential and meeting their reading goals.

We will be using the Accelerated Reading program, which focuses on books and lessons to
accomplish these goals. There are two goals to meet, a point goal and a percentage goal. The
point goal will be for reading and earning a given number of points. The test average is the
second goal. Students in standard Literature need to earn at least 25 points each nine weeks.
(I will make exceptions if necessary) Both of these goals are counted as three grades each
quarter.

This program allows students to choose what subjects they are reading rather than having to
read things they have little or no interest in. Is your child allowed to read non-AR books? Of
course!! I will give them instructions on how to write a test that I will put on the computer
so it can be counted toward their goal.

We will begin by giving a computer test to each student to determine what level they should
be reading. This individualizing allows students at whatever reading level to grow and be
successful.

We will also be reading novels as a class. These books will be read in class. There will
be assignments associated with each novel. Each of these novels will be AR books and count
toward your child’s goal.

Know what your child is reading! Inside the cover of his/her library book should be the
grade level, number of AR points, and a rating:
                                          LG – Lower Grades
                                          MG – Middle Grades
                                          UG – Upper Grades

Discuss with your student what you consider appropriate for them to read. Lower grades
should be considered a “clean read”, Middle and upper grades are not necessarily “clean reads”.
Our Librarian Miss Simer will be glad to tell your child if their book is a clean read and
suggest a series of books that are clean reads. Encourage them to talk to her.
