Reading Calendar
Each student is expected to read (or be read to) a minimum of twenty minutes
five days a week. Be sure to color in the picture on the date that reading
takes place and return the calendar at the end of the month.
Always check the weekly newsletter for opportunities to reinforce your
child's learning. There are several activities that your child can do to
strengthen their academic skills at home.
Here is a list of suggested activities:
1. Read with/to your child daily
2. Study weekly spelling list
3. Practice addition/subtraction facts with flashcards
4. Talk with your child about what they learned that day in school. I know
students are reluctant to talk sometimes, but if you ask the right questions
you may get your child talking. For example, "What was your favorite
activity in the classroom today?"
5. As you read a book together, ask about chacters, setting, and
story sequencs, ask questions. "What would you do if you were___?"
6. As I mentioned earlier, check the current newsletter for
opportunitites to have a teachable moment while riding in the
car, ordering from a menu at a restaurant, or buying something
at a store.
7. Have your child practice reading a calendar by keeping their own
calendar and writing information on the calendar.
8. We practice counting money every day during calendar time.
Practice counting money at home. I have friends that taught
their pre-schooler how to count money using a very effective
method. If he could accurately count the money in his dad's
pocket he could keep it. Very motivating! :)
9. Practice telling time and talking about the time during routine
activities.
