What is PASSPORT?
Elementary years are exciting times, but it can be stressful to young
children if they do not have certain skills to keep up in the classroom. The
PASSPORT program has been designed to provide extra attention and support to
students who are struggling to keep up, so they can be successful in the
classroom. Students are assisted in learning strategies, specific phonetic,
comprehension, or math skills.
During the time children spend in PASSPORT, the teachers use a variety of
materials such as novels, games, books, computer software, hands on
activities, and journals. This helps to engage the children and make their
time spent in PASSPORT more worthwhile.
Reading PASSPORT students work small groups learning phonics, sight
words and other reading skills and strategies. The goal is to have all
students reading at grade level or higher before graduating the PASSPORT
program.
Students attending math PASSPORT are also seen in small groups.
The students will work on reinforcing their math skills focusing on the
specific skills deficits. They will do oral drills and play skill
reinforcement games that will be used during their sessions and at home.
The goal is to help children to become proficient at their grade level and
then graduate from the PASSPORT program.
--------------------------------------
When is PASSPORT?
Children attend PASSPORT class up to four times a week for twenty to thirty
minutes a session. This allows students to have approximately two hours of
extra assistance a week.
--------------------------------------
How does a student qualify?
The main qualifiers for students to attend PASSPORT are performance on
various assessments that are given to students throughout the school year
such as; Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills testing, Fox in
the Box, Durrell test of Basic Literacy, STAR Reading, STAR Math, DDI Basic
Math Skills test, State mandated testing, and Teacher given tests. Teacher
observations and recommendations are also taken into consideration.
--------------------------------------
Do students receive grades?
Students do not get grades from PASSPORT teachers, but the teachers will
send progress monitoring information home, and feel free to contact your
child's PASSPORT teacher at any time via email to get an update.

How can I help my child in reading?
LISTEN to your child every night. They should be reading at least 20 minutes
every evening. This shows that you think what your child is learning is very
important. Having your child read out loud reinforces the skills and
strategies being learned at school.
PRAISE your child for any effort he/ she makes. Reading should be a pleasant
time for parent and child. Your child already knows many things about
reading. Look for them.
READ to your child. Hearing an adult read will help your child improve
his/her phrasing and expression. While you are reading you can ask
questions about what is happening in the story.
COMMUNICATE with your child’s teachers on a regular basis. It allows you to
keep up with your child’s progress. If you have any questions or concerns
please contact your child’s teacher or the literacy coach as soon as you
can.
--------------------------------------
How can I help my child in math?
TALK with your child about real life situations that involve math. This
shows your child that the skills they are learning will be important when
they grow up.
LOOK for your child to bring home from school a HOME LINK (k-3) or a STUDY
LINK (4-5). These correspond to what your child is learning at school. Ask
your child to “teach” you the lesson he/ she is learning, this reinforces
new skills.
COMMUNICATE with your child’s teachers on a regular basis. It allows you to
keep up with your child’s progress. If you have any questions or concerns
please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Hirzel as soon as you can.
