How often will we receive a newsletter from Mrs. Coshow?

A newsletter will be sent out by the 4th grade team once a week
at the beginning of each week. My email is
coshowj@deercreek.k12.ok.us. To save
paper, I will be updating my website weekly and you can get
information quickly and easily this way, however, if you would
prefer a hard copy of the announcements, please email me
with your request.

How are guided reading groups organized?

Guided reading groups are just small groups of students, usually
no more than 5, who
are currently reading on or about the same level. To determine
this, one way this is determined is through the STAR Reading test
score.

What can I do at home to help my child become a better reader?

Parent involvement is crucial to a student becoming a lifelong
reader.

A parent who will take time to sit and read with his or her
child, even for brief period each evening will help set an
example.

Try to help your child find out what his/her interests are.
This will help in the book selection. After determining which
book to read, make sure that book is on your child's level. You
and your child can also look up a book by reading range too. If
the book is not an AR book, a good rule to determine the
appropriateness of a book for a child is to have them read the
first page. If there are 5 words missed,
that book is not the one for them and they need to choose one
that is
easier. Also asking what the child has just read and having them
give a few
details is a good way to determine if the book is appropriate.
Check with
the student by asking to see the book he or she brought home from
the media
center.
After the book has been chosen, the following is helpful:
1. Be sure to stop every few paragraphs and ask questions about
word
meanings, what the story is about, or maybe a few facts about a
character.
2. When they see you reading for enjoyment, they will have a
great role
model for reading!
3. Remember you are your child's first teacher! Children learn
about what
they see and experience!

What can you tell me about the spelling curriculum?

The spelling words are taken from the story being read during
Mrs. Pippin's reading rotation. A pretest will be given at the
beginning of the week, and if the student scores a 100%, he or
she will be exempt from the test on Friday. The students will be
working on spelling skills through the use of a spelling workbook
which will have more challenging vocabulary words as well.
