Dear Parents,
     
     You are ALWAYS welcome to come by and visit our media center anytime 
you're in the building.  There are lots of books to "check-out".  We also 
have reading level lists that might help you "suggest" specific series for 
your students.  If we can be of any help, or answer your questions, please 
let us know!
     TO ACCESS THE "DESTINY" LIBRARY CATALOG FOR ROSE UNION ON YOUR HOME 
COMPUTER:  Go to http://library.deercreek.k12.ok.us/.  Click on the Deer 
Creek Rose Union Elementary choice.  This is the exact same catalog our 
students use here in the Rose Union library to look-up their books!  All 1-5 
grade students have been instructed on how to use the catalog.  Usually the 
1st and 2nd graders use the "Visual" catalog.  It can be accessed by clicking 
on the "Visual" button on the upper right-hand side of the catalog home 
page.  Or students may search by author (last name first), title, keyword, or 
subject.  The "One Search" will bring up web-sites on the internet that are 
about whatever the student is searching for, but not R.U. books. 
     To limit the search or search for more than one keyword at a time, click 
on the "Power" button on the menu bar.  Now you may type in whether you want 
a fiction or nonfiction book.  To limit the search by reading level, click on 
the "Unlimited" button at the bottom of the page. Now that we're starting 
A.R. at R.U., you may want to choose "Accelerated Reader" and put in your 
student's reading level.  You need to choose a reading range.  Don't make the 
range too narrow or very few books will come up.  For example, if your 
child's reading level is 3.3, you'll want to type in a range of at least 2.9 
to 3.7 to bring up a good selection of book choices!  
     After your child locates a book of interest, they may click on 
the "Details" button next to the title to see the book's summary, number of 
pages, interest level and exact reading level.  Not every title entry has all 
this information, but most of them do.
     You might want to write down the book's "call number" (Ex: easy books 
will have an "E" and the first three leters of the author'a last name; 
fiction books have "Fic" with the first three letters of the author's last 
name; nonfiction books will have a "Dewey Decimal" subject number with the 
three author letters; and biographies will have a "B" and the first three 
letters of the last name of the person they're written about for their call 
number.  These call numbers (or the book's address) will be located on the 
screen under the picture of the book's front cover or, if there's not a 
picture, the call number will be to the left of the title.  You may also want 
to print the screen with your child's selection.
     I would suggest that if there are certain reading levels you'd like your 
child to stay within, you please send the list of titles with them so they 
can bring it to the library when they select books.  We're more than happy to 
help them look-up books on their level here on the library computers, but 
unless their teacher lets them come in with the library pass, it's difficult 
to find the time to help all the students when they're here during their 
scheduled library class time use just six computers and check-out books.  
These lists are also excellent to take to the public library as they have 
many of the same books we have here at Rose Union.  
     Hopefully these directions will enable you to see what books we have 
that are on your child's reading level and learn what they enjoy reading!  If
