Weeks of November 23-27 and November 30-December 4
We are testing over Ch. 8 today (Monday, November 23) and will do a fun creative writing activity tomorrow. I will also assign our next writing project tomorrow: a Holiday Demonstation, which will include a "How To" Essay that we will work on in class next week. The students will demonstrate their projects the week of December 7, in front of the class to practice public speaking skills. Please look for a note about the project tomorrow (Tuesday, November 24). Please be sure to discuss the project with your child and return the bottom portion of the note by Tuesday, December 1.
Week of November 16-20
We are starting Ch. 8 this week which includes object pronouns, mixed pattern sentences, verb tense, and prinicpal parts of verbs. It is a fairly short chapter so we will review Friday for a test on Monday.
Week of November 9-13
We began Ch. 7 last week and will continue in the chapter throughout this week with a test on Friday. The skills for this chapter include direct objects, verb transitive, Pattern 2 sentences, verb tenses, regular/irregular verbs, and helping verbs. On Thursday we will do Ch. 7 Checkup 35, which will be an excellent review and study guide for Friday's test. Be sure to send a note with your child to let me know you studied together so he/she can get an extra five points added to the test score.
Week of November 2-6
We are still working on our scarecrow descriptive essays. I find it helps students become better writers if I can conference with each student about his/her writing, which can take a while. When we finish conferencing sometime this week, we will resume our grammar practice with Chapter 7.
Week of October 26-30
We are testing Ch. 6 Monday, October 26, and we will begin our first writing project on Tuesday, October 27. The students will be working on a descriptive essay about a scarecrow. They will be introduced to the Four Square method of writing to help them organize their thoughts into paragraphs.
Week of October 19-23
We are beginning Chapter 6 this week which will include interjections, possessive noun adjectives, clauses, subordinate conjunctions, and complex sentences. The students will test over Chapter 6 on Monday, October 26.
Week of October 12-16
We have a short week this week with Fall Break. We are adding "A" and "An" to our grammar skills this week. We will do the Chapter 5 Check Up on Tuesday and test over Chapter 5 on Wednesday. The test will look like Tuesday's reveiw. Remember a note letting me know you studied with your child adds five points to the test score. Have a wonderful Fall Break!
Week of October 5-9
Due to the number of students absent over the last week and a half, I have chosen to postpone Monday's test (Oct. 5) until Tuesday (Oct. 6). We will use Monday as a "Make-Up Day" to help students who are behind have some extra time to catch up. For those students already caught up, they will have an opportunity for extra journaling and/or AR reading.
This week we will add helping verbs, the adverb "NOT," compound sentences, comma splices, run-on sentences, coordinating conjunctions, connective adverbs, and contractions to our grammar lessons.
Hello and welcome!
I am Mrs. Howard, and I teach SHURLEY ENGLISH (Grammar) and Writing.
Students will gain confidence in their Language skills while working with the Shurley Method of instruction. The Shurley Method maintains that effective instruction in English must be founded upon an understanding of how the eight parts of speech work together in a sentence. With the use of fun jingles, the Shurley Method teaches the students where to go, what to ask, and what to expect of every word in a sentence.
Students are kept on the learning task continually through each lesson using verbal, auditory, and sight activities. It is the consistent repetition and daily practice of all skills taught that makes this program successful.
Along with the Shurley Method of English, students will receive instruction on the 5 paragraph
format and Four Square Writing. Four Square Writing teaches students to write cohesive paragraphs with many details and descriptive language. It shows them how to put 5 paragraphs together in the proper sequence when writing. The 5-Paragraph Format is just further instruction that solidifies writing an essay in a logical sequence.
