We will be skipping around a bit for the remainder of the year to best utilize our time in preparation for the CRT this spring.  Today we learned about integers in Topic 17, Lesson 1.  Tomorrow we will learn about about ordered pairs in Topic 17, Lesson 2.  Wednesday we will skip to Topic 18 (Graphs & Data) which covers data from surveys, bar graphs, picture graphs, line graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, circle graphs, mean, median, mode, and range.  We will continue to work in Topic 18 through next week.  We will not test over Topics 17 nor 18.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

We will begin Topic 20 tomorrow.  Yes, we're skipping several topics.  Topic 20 is on Probability and will include lessons on outcomes, writing probability as a fraction, experiments and predictions, and solving simpler problems.  We will test over Topic 20 on Tuesday, November 24.

***TEST OVER TOPIC 6 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17***

Monday, November 2, 2009

We will do a benchmark test on Tuesday to see how the students are retaining the math skills taught up to this point.  On Wednesday, we will begin Topic 6 (Variables and Expressions).  In Topic 6, students will practice the following skills in regard to algebra:  variables and expressions, patterns and expressions, distributive property, order of operations, and solving word problems by acting out and using reasoning.  The test for Topic 6 is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, November 17.

***TEST OVER TOPIC 5 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2***

Monday, October 19, 2009

We will begin Topic 5 (Dividing by 2-Digit Divisors) on Tuesday, October 20.  Please look for a parent letter to go home on Tuesday.  During this unit, students will use patterns to divide, estimate quotients with 2-digit divisors, solve multi-step problems, divide by multiples of 10, find 1-digit quotients, find 2-digit quotients, estimate and divide with greater numbers, and solve word problems involving missing or extra information.  The tentative date for the Topic 5 Test is Friday, October 30.

****TEST OVER TOPIC 4 MONDAY, OCTOBER 19****
Doing the Topic 4 Test out of the textbook is a great way to prepare for the multiple choice test I'll give.  Remember a note letting me know you studied together adds five points to the test score.  Have a great Fall Break!

Friday, October 2, 2009

We will begin Topic 4 (Dividing by 1-Digit Divisors).  Troughout this unit, students will divide multiples of 10 and 100, estimate quotients, determine reasonableness, connect models and symbols, divide by 1-digit divisors, solve division problems with zeros in the quotient, understand factors, identify prime and composite numbers, and draw pictures as well as write equations to solve word problems.

Many students are exhibiting difficulty with basic multiplication and division facts.  Please make daily math facts practice a homework expectation to make future math topics less frustrating for your child.
