May 18
We had a super fun day for our last day of school. We had an awesome pizza party, Thanks so much Daveys! We played several games: eraser tag, heads down-seven up, black socks, etc. We finished up adding papers to our portfolios! Enjoy the wonderful keepsakes. The last 30 minutes we chose photos I printed off. You may want to make a scrapbook for 1st grade, you could even add some of the pics to the backside of the School Memory book that we made this week. Have your child write a caption for the photos in the memory book or scrapbook.  If your child didn't get his or hers finished you can always have finish when complaining of being bored!
I will continue to add some of our pix to our Photo Gallery this summer. Check back often. Any pictures you would like save to your computer, I will leave up all the pictures until first week of August. I also gave my rockstars, some paper for them  to finish their books that we were in the process of beginning. The brainstorming and 1st draft is in your child's workstation folder. The bookmaking paper is paper clipped. In the fall, I would love to see the completed books. I hope your child will write many books this summer. The math workbook we used some, for practice of skills learned have your child work on throughout summer when needing something to do. Also Compass should be up all summer and Razz Kids, if any questions let me know. The journals I sent home this week, have your child read them to you. Any words that are hard to make out, you should write what your child says it says underneath like I have done on some of the journal entries and in your child's portfolio. This will help later when they  are looking through it as they grow up and graduate from High School. I know hard to believe, but it will be here before you know it!

Again I would like to Thank all of you so much for the gifts, giftcards, flowers, and recipes, sweet cards, and emails of praise. I didn't get to my thank you notes this week, everything just snuck up on me. So Sorry! : ( I will miss having your child in my class and having you as my class parents. We have had such a fantastic year! I am so so proud of all the progress my students have each gained! Have a wonderful summer break and don't forget how important is to read each night for at least 20-30 minutes. Keep up the great reading by practicing books, magazines, Razz Kids, sight word phrases, sight words, etc. on your level!

If your child would like to email me, there is a tab at left to click on: Email. I would love to hear how your summer is going and what you are up to. You will need to help them by adding your email address. Also I love getting mail from my first grade friends, my address is P.O. box 4 Okarche, OK 73762. I will write back!

Have a fun-filled summer break! Come by and see me this fall, we will be in the same hall! Yea! Enjoy your kiddos, I will miss them!

Feb. 21-24
I hope everyone enjoyed the 3 day weekend!
Spelling: No spelling this week and No spelling test on Friday, we will work on spelling and reading our sight words this week for review.
Phonics/Reading:We will continue working on our Bossy R booklets, when these come home, have your child practice reading the bossy r words. Keep as a resource. Digraph ea has 3 sounds,as in leaf, thread, and steak,Spelling with the Dropping rule and Spelling by Adding a Consonant suffix. The Dropping rule: When a word ends with the silent e, drop the e before adding a vowel suffix. Adding a consonant suffix: To spell a word with a consonant suffix, just add the suffix to the end of the root word. We will also learn diphthongs oi and oy as in oil and toy. A diphthong is two vowel sounds that come together so fast that they are considered to be one syllable. When spelling with oi and oy, usually use oi in initial and medial position, and oy in the final position. We will be learning more about nouns and verbs this week in language arts, and looking for them in our reading and writing. Look for our new learning when reading each night.
Two readers will come home this week in reader bookbag, we will work on getting caught up on adding last weeks sight words to our sight word rings, please return each day and practice nightly.
Math: We are continuing to work with place value using our base 10 blocks, skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's to 100, and being able to tell if a # is odd or even, along with telling time to the hour/half-hour, and counting coins. Please practice at home these concepts as well. I will send home a place value game, for the longs or 10's you could use markers, crayons, popsicle stix, or even paper clips, for the 1's us single paper clips, pennies, pasta, beans, etc. I will send home on Wednesday!

Feb. 6-10
Spelling:my, tell, her, soon, shall, stringy, made, feelings, packed, number, want, don't
Challege words: sniffles, holiday, mailbox
Phonics:
We will continue making our bossy r booklets to practice reading bossy r words.  Digraph ch as is cheese, combination qu as in quilt, Soft (cedilla) C as in circle, spelling rule: In the medial position, the /s/ sound is regularly spelled with the letter c when the sound is followed by e,i, or y, Final /s/ spelling rule: use ss after a short vowel, use ce after a long vowel, use se after anything else. Digraph ow as in bow.
Reading: Students will be bringing home saxon readers: #25,26,27, and 28 this week. Be sure to practice each night and record on Reader Bookbag/Tool box sheet. Return baggy to school each day with Sight word ring and this weeks readers. If the readers are too difficult for your child to read, first try reading it to your child, then have them read the reader to you. Don't forget about echo reading if still struggling, you read a line or page then they read back to you. Point to words as you model reading with tone and fluency. Another strategy we are practicing in class when reading longer words is to cover up parts of the word, break into syllables, and cover up suffixes. Also look for digraphs, combinations, blends, word chunks we have studied in difficult words. This seems to really help break up and read the longer challenging words when reading readers and library books.
A.R. Quizzes:
Remind your child to sign up for A.R. quizzes on any library books they have read or listened to you read. Read 2-3 times and ask your child comprehension questions about the story.  I like for my students to take a quiz on at least one of their A.R. books they have checked out. Several students have already met their A.R. goal of 5 points this 9 weeks. When your child meets his/her goal they go visit Mrs. Edwards for a prize. If they continue reading and taking A.R. quizzes, they can earn other rewards from me. Way to go: Max, Camryn, Carrie, Walon, Matt, Caylee, and Abby! I have several other students who are very close to meeting his/her goal! Remember I can help your child pick out books if they will check them in on Tuesdays at our scheduled Library day. Students that take quizzes on their books, can go to the library several times during the week. Also we have a classroom Library that students are more than welcome to check out A.R. books from. Please put back in Reader bookbag to  protect my books.
Sight Words: We only have one new sight word this week: once
Please practice sight word ring and Dolch sight word sheet (only if I sent home with your child last Thursday) nightly! I will assess each week children that needing extra help in reading/sight words.
Treasure Basal readers-I have checked out basal readers to all my students (books that have a collection of stories in one hardback book written on 1st grade reading levels). When these come home, listen to your child read as many stories as they wish, may keep at home for a few days at a time,or put back in backpack each day. In the basal 1.2-1.5 (which can be found on side or back), the main selection stories are A.R. stories and students may take a A.R. quiz on these stories at school. Once your child has read all of the basal let me know and I can switch out for a new basal.
Math:We will begin topic 10, working on skip counting, and looking at patterns on the hundred grid. We will also work out of topic 11, introducing place value of 10's and 1's, using base 10 blocks. At home, I sent home a blue money mat last week to practice counting money, we use these in the class by laying our money on when counting coins. Give your child a few coins starting with pennies and nickels, then add in dimes and quarters for more challenge. Let them show you how we use the mat to count money. Work on recognizing the coins and values of each first, then begin counting the coins.
Social Studies/Science/Enrichment: We will be learning facts about some of our famous presidents, recognizing which president's are on our coins and dollars. We will make a booklet about facts that we learn about the presidents.
Report Cards: On our report cards this 9 weeks we will add to our assessment, Language area-same areas will be assessed, Reading & Language arts we will add applies comprehension strategies, in math we will add Counts by 1,2,5, and 10 to 100, uses strategies for addtion facts 1-10, Identifies, names, and counts pennies, nickels, and dimes, tells time to the hour and half hour. We will access in all the same areas as last 9 weeks. If any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Then mix up review in a stack again.
Challenge-Students that already know sight words, work on spelling the sight words.
Don't forget about resources at left under Saxon and Dolch sight words.

Your child should be able to tell and show you what an A.R. book is and how to find the level. We have a card in class that helps your child find library books on his or her level in the library. I only require that one of his or her library books be on his or her level each time we visit the library. Read the picture books at least 2-3 times and ask comprehension questions as you read with your child. Talk about what is going on throughout the book. No spelling this week
. Work on reading sight words this week. For challenge, practice spelling sight words.
Phonics/Reading: We are reviewing past learning this week. We practicing our reading strategies by reading with a buddy and reading independently in class. Visit Razz Kids, to practice reading at home besides library books.
Writing: We wrote our letters to Santa and we are reading many holiday books  during storytime. We learned that letters have parts such as a greeting, the body, the closing, and signature. I will have these hung in or outside our classroom and  will send home by next Monday.
Sight words-I have taught a few new ways to practice sight words at home and in class. I will send home a sheet that has words that your needs to practice at home several times a week. Sort through ring of sight words the words that need the most focus. You can lay out around the room. Tell your child to go find a certain word. This gets them up and moving instead of just going through sight words. Also you could put sight words that need practice in a bag or container, give one minute to see how many words can pull out of bag and read correctly. If he or she doesn't know it set it to the side and then review it, help see words or chunks in the  sight word. Then put all back in bag, do activity 2-3 more times to see if can get more words than last time. Don't forget there are resources under Saxon and Dolch sight words at left tab.
Math: We have been playing different games to practice using our math strategies using our # line and 100 grid. We learned a game called Koosh ball math facts using the Smartboard. Students throw a Koosh ball at smart board, a fact pops up, they tell answer by using different strategies to find answer. We  have also been playing Math Marks the Spot, we roll 3 foam dice cubes, 2 #'s and one + or - cube, then  find sum on the large mat. There are so many ways to practice our math facts! I hope your child is learning math is FUN and enjoying our math games! I will be sending home a doubles rap and song to help learn/practice math doubles facts.
Assessment: I will continue DRA's this week to assess your child's reading level! I am excited in the progress I am observing! Hard work pays off! Remember how important it is to READ EVERYDAY with your child. If you are having challenges helping your child in any areas, I will be more than happy to show you some ways to help reading go more smoothly!

I've updated our class Wishlist at side bar on left!
Have a Spectacular Week!

September 19-23
Sorry updates are coming so late this week...Thanks for your patience!
We started spelling this week on Monday, I will give a spelling quiz on Friday morning.
Our 10 words are; on, no, not, top, pop, I, in, it, pin, tip.
The spelling words are a review of the past sounds and rules from the past 2 weeks. This weeks words are rather simple, the words will get more challenging as we learn more sounds. I will usually give a spelling pre-test on Monday, if your child misses 2 or less I will give them 3 challenge words to practice along with  the original spelling list. If majority of the class does really well on their pre-test then I will give bonus words for extra points. Please practice spelling words also on 3 lined paper. There are some different ideas to help practice spelling words under side menu...spelling words and activities on left. Please practice a few minutes each night for spelling. Do not make spelling practice and sp. tests to be your main focus in the evenings, READING should be what you spend most of your homework time on each evening (reading bookbag readers and library books) at least 20 minutes.
Reading/Phonics: Letters f, h, g, r, k, and c, we will learn handsign, sound, keyword, and letter formation of these letters. Sight words this week are: of, do, into, to, who, you, your, and color. We circle sight words, they can't be sounded out and need to be learned by sight! Look for these when reading readers and library books. We will be making sight word cards on notecards and add to a metal ring each week, I will start sending these home this next week in your child's Bookbag Reader bag. Please practice reading these sight words and always return in Bookbag with readers and sign that you practiced them 2-3 times each week. This week we have been working on word families and rhyming words. For example: if I can spell hot, I can spell pot, tot, lot, cot, etc. When on the go in the car, give a word and see if your child can give you words that rhyme.  I am assessing your child's reading level by using multiple assessments throughout the next few weeks.
Bookbag Readers-Please listen to your child read the readers that come home in the bookbag (zip-loc) each night, your child is working on fluency when rereading little readers. Work on comprehension by having your child answer questions about the readers at end of book, other good questions to ask are: What is your favorite part and why? Retell what happened in the story, start at beginning to end, Who are the characters?, Where does the story take place (setting)?, etc. We will usually keep 2-3 Saxon Phonics readers in bookbag at a time, then I will have your child take them out of bookbag and place on keep side of WOW folder to practice at home. On the sign-off sheet, just list #'s of readers on one line, and if practice sight words also write on same line (next week.) Please help your child be responsible to return Reader Book bag and readers each day, we practice these in class during workstations and Buddy reading.
Math-We started a new topic this week-Geometry, we always start with a pre-test to find out what our students already know/don't know, these will be sent home with the post-test at the end of the topic. This week we are identifying plane shapes such as circle, triangle, rectangle, square, hexagon, rhombus, and trapezoids. We are learning how many straight sides, and corners. We are learning that we can sort these shapes in different ways by looking at thier attributes.
Don't forget to label your child's first and last names in Jackets, outer garments, and lunch boxes. If your child ever loses a jacket or something always remind them to check the lost in found that is in the lunchroom, or you are more that welcome to help them check for it if you are up at school.
Scholatic Book Orders: I will send home info about book orders on Monday. The due date is this Friday! I will also add some recommendations for beginning readers, and good authors to keep in mind! You can order online, info is under tab Scholastic Book Orders. I prefer you order online because we get extra free books for our classroom and it makes it easier on me. I  will accept either way through paper orders or online. If you send in paper orders please send one check made to Scholastic Book Clubs in an envelope. Thanks for helping encourage your child to read!

Have a sensational week and weekend!

September 12-16
Thank you to all the families who donated goodies for Grandparent/Family day! We had an awesome turn out! It was so nice to meet all of our guests! We hope you enjoyed your time with us, we appreciate everyone that was able to make it!
This week...in Phonics/Reading we are working on letters Zz, Ss, suffix s, blends pl, sl, sn, sp, spl, and st, letter Dd. New sight words are the and said. These are words that can't be sounded out and will need to be learned by sight. Soon we will be making sight word cards in class to practice at home and in class, they will come home in a Reader Ziploc Baggy. You can find all of the Saxon sight words and activities on the side menu. There will be two Saxon readers that will come home this week, please practice listening to your child read the readers and always return to school the next day. Ask comprehension questions at back, have retell what happened in these readers. Each week students will start bringing home 2-3 readers in Bookbag to practice. Homework this week is a numbers handwriting practice sheet and homework side of Zz phonics paper. If questions of what to do read parent info at bottom of paper. Return all homework by Friday. Spelling words and tests will begin next week. I will send home words on Monday and we will test on Friday. In Math-We are continuing to work on number formation 0-12. We are learning that it is easier to see how many dots if they are arranged in a pattern, like on a domino or dice. We will be learning how to use a 5 and 10 frame to count counters more quickly. We will have a test over topic 1 and begin topic 8-Geometry with a pre-test to see what your child already knows.
We will go to the Library on Tuesday at 10:35 this week. Please try to return Library books every Tuesday so I can help guide in making good book choices. I will continue assessing your child's reading level through different assessments this week and next.
We  will be keeping our classroom water bottles at school during the week and we will send home on Friday to clean, we have had several spill in backpacks and get Library books wet and other important items. Thanks for you help with this!
Have a Wonderful Week!

September 2-9
Thank you to all my parents that attended Parent Night, don't forget there are many resources under Back to School Night info on the left and also Parent Websites-many resources there too.
This week...in Phonics/Reading we are reviewing/learning letter Pp, Ii, Ll, Aa, Zz, and Ss. Last week learned letters Nn, Oo, and Tt. We brainstorm words with these letters, work on letter formation, learn keywords to help remember these letters and sounds, spell words with these sounds and previous sounds from last week, learn the sign language for each letter introduced, and make words using our letter tiles. Sometimes we use our slates, phonics paper, or back of handwriting paper to practice our new learning. In reading, we are learning how to Pick Good Fit books. We made a bookmark to help us remember to I PICK:P-purpose for reading book, I-interest-does it interest me?, C-comprehend-do I understand the story, K-know some or most of words on page. We also have been learning about the 5 finger rule. When checking to see if a book is one on our level, we start reading on a page that has some text, when you come to a word that you don't know put up a finger, if by end of page you have 5 or more fingers up, the book would not be a Good Fit Book on our level. It could be a book that our family could read to us or help us read. I will usually try to have my students check out from the library at least one book that is close to their reading level. This month I will continue assessing your childs reading level through different types of assessments.
In math, we are practicing using TouchMath for # 1-4 last week, we will continue learning how to use touchmath for #'s 5-9. We are working on number formation 0-12. We are learning that it is easier to see how many dots if they are arranged in a pattern, like on a domino or dice. We will be learning how to use a 5 and 10 frame to count counters more quickly. A fun activity at home, pull out your dominoes and look at patterns, students can make addition sentences by adding the dots on each side. Students could also make tally marks to match the total dots, we say 4 stand tall and one will fall when making tallies. We will use dominoes in math for this activity and also to find #'s on a number grid, 5 dots/4 dots-make # 54 or # 45...find on the 100 grid. We have Calendar time each day to practice many skills with our # of the day/days in school. Some things we review every day at calendar are time, money, days of week, months of year, place value, graphing, counting by 1, 10, 5, and 2's.
We will be making special cards for our Grandparents'/special friends that will be coming this Friday. Please email me how many guests will be attending.  If your child doesn't have a grandparent or close relative that can attend, you or your spouse is welcome to come. If not I will pair your child up with a classmate that has several guests.
Grandparents'/Family Day will be on Friday, September 9 for 1st grade at 9:45-10:15. Students can invite Grandparents or special family members to this celebration.  If you would like to help send cookies, juice boxes, Juice/cups, napkins, small water bottles please email me or let our homeroom mom, Andrea Davey, know. Her email is
albdavey@yahoo.com . We will need 5-6 dozen cookies, these can be store bought or homemade.
We are subscribing to National Geographic Young Explorer Magazine this year to enrich our Reading, Science, and Social Studies programs. Please send a check made out to Rose Union for $4.35 next week if you haven't already. Your child will receive a magazine each month in class. It will come home at the end of the month for you to keep.
Have a Fabulous Four day week!

Week of Aug. 22-26
First Grade Parents,
Welcome to our class :)
We have been busy building our classroom community by playing several games to get to know our class family better. We have been reading several books in class, a few are Chrysanthemum, Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon,  Personal Space Camp, It's Hard to be a Verb, and Have you Filled a Bucket Today? We have also been learning some new math games that will be added to our Math Workstations in the upcoming weeks. During the games we are learning how to work together, have good sportsmanship, and guide one another while practicing our math skills. This past week and the upcoming weeks we will continue to practice procedures such as walking in the hall quietly, playground safety, cafeteria expectations, and many more classroom procedures.
Please sign up for Newsflash on the left if you haven't already, you can enter an email address or your cell phone to receive updates to our class website.
A few important notes...
Send a pop-top water bottle to keep in our classroom this year. I will send it home on Friday to be cleaned then return on Monday. On Monday I will begin sending a W.O.W. (Watch Our Work) daily folder home with your child. Homework (papers) will come home on Monday and are always due on Friday unless noted otherwise. Please help your child clean out his/her folder each night and go over any papers/notes. If your child ever has a change in afterschool plans please send me a note in morning, if you forget, please call the office and they will get a note to me and your child. I will not let your child go home with another student unless I get some sort of note/call from you! If you email me the change in plans, do so before 2:00 pm and still call the office. Thanks so much for your help with this! The best way to reach me is through email. My email address is wittrockt@deercreek.k12.ok.us , there is also a tab at bottom on side menu, click on Email. I have updated on the side menu our Class List and Daily Schedule that can answer questions. You can also print out a monthly School Lunch Menu from the side bar. I have introduced your child to a few cool websites under Kid Websites, check out under Reading-Starfall reading/Calendar, and Math-Fun 4 the Brain (click on addition at top.) There are also parent resources under Parent Websites.
There has been a few questions about Lunch MoneyAccounts, you can send cash, check, or pay online to your child's account. You do not need to pay everyday, it is easier if you will send a check or cash for the month or for the week (s). Please put in manilla envelope that I gave you at Meet the Teacher. Write down on front of envelope the information and I will initial that I received it. Please keep envelope in a safe place at home unless sending money to school. The Lunch Ladies will send a small piece of paper to let you know when your child's account is getting low or has a negative balance.
Please let me know if any questions or concerns. I hope your child is loving 1st Grade! I have enjoyed reading their Homework about themselves and about their name. We are having so much fun and I look forward to an Outstanding year working with you and your child!
I hope you are having a restful weekend!
Mrs. Tiffany Wittrock
