Grades 3-5 can take the SEQUOYAH CHALLENGE and read or LISTEN to 3 or more
of the 15 Sequoyah books. In April, students who have read or heard 3 or
more of the books on the list will vote for their favorite. Students all
over the state of Oklahoma will vote and the winner will be announced.
These books are a recommended reading list put together by elementary

************************Gold Medal Reading!!!****************************
GRADES 1-5.
Gold Medal Reading
To refresh your memory:
**Gold Medals are earned by reaching 100% of goal for each nine
weeks a students is enrolled at Horace Mann
*Silver Medals are earned by reaching 100% of goal for 3 of the 4
nine weeks.
Each teacher will receive a *Most Improved award* for the student who has
shown the most improvement with the AR program over the year. This can be
measured by a student’s participation in the program and by monitoring
progress shown on the STAR test. The STAR test is only one of the
indications you may use—a lot of this is your observation of student progress
and attitude toward reading. Another indication could be a student whose
percent correct has increased from 60% to 85% or better.
In addition: A *Principal’s Award* will be given to a child in each
classroom who has exceeded the goal for point goals. There have been many
students who strive for 200% or 300% each nine weeks. This is good because
it keeps them reading!
