FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What are the times class begins and ends? Our A. M. pre-k students will arrive from 8:30 - 8:55. Students must be walked to our building by an adult. They will be released at 11:20 - 11:25 in the circle drive by the Media Center. Our P.M. students will arrive from 12:45 - 1:00 and will be released at 3:05 - 3:10 in the circle drive by the Media Center. We will begin the year with healthy snacks for the first two to three weeks daily. For the remainder of the first nine weeks, we will have periodic snacks. Snacks must be healthy (sugar may not be the main ingredient in our snacks). I will have a sign-up list in the classroom on Parent Meeting day. Can my child bring toys to school? No, our school does not allow toys from home to be brought to school. They could be lost or damaged. Our classroom is supplied with some of the most inviting educational materials available. Your child won't need a toy from home to keep them busy. Can I volunteer in the classroom? Absolutely, E-mail me or write me a note and let me know you are interested, and what days/times you are available. I will then get back with you to schedule a time. YEA! WE LOVE HELPERS!! How can I help my child academically? The most important thing is READ EVERY DAY! I will be sending home a monthly calendar with Parent/Child Home Acitivities. Please try to complete at least 20 activities per month. What is your discipline style? I believe that children are pleasers and want to do what is right. We will constantly model correct behavior, re-direct behavior that may result in poor decisions, and help the child problem solve to find solutions to their problems. I will be in communication with home to help find solutions that will benefit the child. I expect all children to treat others with respect and care. With this positive approach to discipline, we have very few behavior problems. Why do I need to stay in my vehicle during pick-up time? The traffic at our school is quite congested at pick-up times. There are several reasons we ask adults to remain in their vehicle: Some of the reasons are: 1. Students will be kept away from traffic and loaded one vehicle at a time. 2. Students can be supervised at all times if they remain in the fenced-in area. 3. No other adult will be able to walk up to your child while they are waiting for their ride. If we had parents walking around the students, we might miss a student being picked up and your child's safety is our utmost concern. I have an appointment, how can I pick up my child early? While we hope that early release will be an occasional occurance, you may certainly pick your child up from school before the end of the day. You must go to the office in the main building and sign them out. The office staff will buzz our intercom and we will begin getting your child ready to go home. You will then walk to our classroom door to get your child. Why do you continually talk about car/booster seats? I am a firm believer in doing whatever is reasonable to protect our children. Oklahoma law says that children 6 years old and younger must ride in a car safety seat. The safest place in your vehicle is the middle of the back seat. In May, 2005, I had a student, Logen, and his mother, Dana, die in a car crash while they were unbuckled. Logen's little sister was buckled into her car seat. She was injured, but was able to heal from her injuries in a few short weeks. She will, however, live without a mother and big brother because they were not wearing their seat belts. Logen's family asked me to share this with each group of parents that come through our classrooms. We want your children to be safe. I am available to answer phone calls from 3:15 - 4:00 most days. I do not have a planning time, but if you want to call me at 390-8585, I will return your call either after school or before school the next day. You can also e-mail me. I do not check my e-mail during instructional time, but I will try to get back with you the same day if at all possible. My e- mail address is kyoung@cnpschools.org. You may also e-mail me through this website's home page. What will my child be learning the first day of school? We will read a story called The Kissing Hand. It talks about a small raccoon named Chester who leaves home for the first time to go to school. He worries so much about missing his mother that she kisses the palm of his hand to send her love to him. So be sure and kiss the palm of your child's hand before leaving him on Tuesday, August 14, and I will do the rest. How to I know what to send for my child's birthday celebration? We celebrate birthdays during our class time once per month. In planning for our monthly celebrations, I will send you a letter for the month of your child's birthday. Let me know what you wish to bring and I will let you know if someone has duplicated your suggestions. Some birthday suggestions are: individual mini cupcakes, cookies, drink boxes or pouches, gift baggies, plates, cups, and napkins. Please remember that we are not allowed to have any home-made goodies. Can I send cough drops in my child's backpack if she has a cough? No. Cough drops are considered medicine and must have an accompanying medical form dropped off in the office. If your child begins coughing in class, we will often offer a peppermint or a drink of water to see if that will help their cough. However, if your child is running a fever along with their cough, please keep them at home until the fever has passed. What is the Scholastic-Let's Find Out Magazine? We realized last year that Social Studies and Science are difficult to integrate into our lessons on a consistent basis and to have those lessons fit our themes. That's when we began searching for some type of material that would be fun, tie into our curriculum, and have a take-home activity for your child. We selected the Scholastic magazine because of the variety of subjects and the brightly colored format of the magazine. In order to defray the $4.91 cost, we removed some items from our supply list. What is the difference between tattling and reporting? This year you will hear us talk about reporting situations instead of tattling. We explain the difference to the students with the words 'in or out'. If a student is telling on another student to get them 'in' trouble, it is tattling. If a student is trying to keep another student 'out' of danger, it is reporting. Reporting is encouraged in our classroom. What address & phone # will you teach my child if we have joint custody? I will ask each child's family to provide one address and that address' phone number. This is usually the address where the child resides most of the time. If the child lives in both places equally, choose the address or phone number he knows the best. Our goal is for your child to be able to share their address and phone number in the case of emergency. My child already knows their letters, colors and shapes. Will she be bored? Actually, I have never taught a bored child. While it would seem reasonable to assume that a child may be bored if they already have the 'academic' skills, much more is actually taught in our class. I design my classroom so that every child is challenged and encouraged to advance to their potential. If a child comes in reading, she will be able to read a book to their classmates periodically at circle time. If a child knows how to use scissors well, he will be able to model the correct procedure for others. For those that know their letters and sounds, we will begin blending them into words. And for those who have not yet mastered these skills, we will work with them on their level and watch them bloom. I think you will be amazed at what your child will accomplish this year. I can't wait! Absolutely, yes. I have a firm conviction that your children will thrive in the nurturing environment we have created in our Pre-K classroom. Children at this age are curious and energetic. We have a classroom where it is safe for them to try new things. Occasionally, a child will need a gift of an extra year before they are ready for a structured program, though. If this is the case, we will discuss it early in the year together and make decisions as a team. |
