ABCs of Pre-K

Parents,

Welcome to our Pre-K class!  I hope you are as excited at I am to begin a new year! I look forward to getting to know you and your
child. The beginning of a school year can be exciting, but filled with a bit of apprehension.  I have prepared the ABC's of Pre-K to
answer many questions you may have. Please keep this information and refer to it often. Please let me know if you have any questions.
If you have a desire to help in the classroom, we could certainly use you.  We would love to get to know you.

Mrs. Young
ABC'S of Mrs. Young's Pre- K

A

Arrival time for Pre-K is very important.  Please make sure your child arrives at school before time to begin our day.  The doors open
at 8:30 and at 12:45.  The tardy bell rings at 8:55 and at 1:00.  We have beginning-of-the-day procedures that take a few minutes.
Also, students need to have time to get a drink and use the restroom.  Please help them arrive earlier rather than later.

Allergies - be sure to inform me of any food allergies.

Absences - School is very important and should only be missed in the event of illness.  3 tardies count as 1 absence.  Please make
every effort to be on time.

Academic Skills - A few skills that will be introduced this year are color recognition, shape recognition, number recognition, large
motor skills, rote counting, small motor skills, language development, increased vocabulary, letter recognition, letter sounds,
graphing, one to one correspondence, sequencing, predicting, problem solving and estimation.

B

BOOSTER SEATS ARE FOR BIG KIDS--Please make sure your child is buckled into a booster seat.  Four year-old children are
required to ride in a booster seat.  The safest part of the vehicle is in a car seat or booster seat buckled into the middle of the back seat.

Backpack - Have your child bring a LARGE backpack (no wheels please) everyday and check it everyday when it comes home with
 your child.

Birthdays - We will have monthly birthday parties.  Every child with birthdays in that month may bring something for our party.  Our
homeroom parent will plan these and let you know what to bring.  We will celebrate July birthdays in August and June birthdays in
 May.

Bathrooms - We have one restroom in the classroom.  Students need to be able to take care of all their toileting needs by themselves.

Book Orders--periodically I will send home a book order from Scholastic.  You may order from this book order if you wish.  This is
strictly optional.  Our class receives free books from each order.  All book orders are due on Friday of the week the order was sent
 home.

C

Conferences - We will have two scheduled conferences this year.  I am available for conference any time you need to talk to me.
Simply call the school office, e-mail me or send me a note and we will set up a time that will work for both of us.

Communication - please let me know how things are going with your child through e-mail, this website, or notes sent to school with
your child.   I will read my e-mail daily most of the time.  I want to know if your child is having a rough time or if they really LOVE
something we are doing.  I can’t help if I don’t know!

Character Education - We discuss respect, responsibility cooperation, service, effort, etc.  These LIFE PRINCIPLES will help us to be
good citizens. We will cheer each other to success.

Color Monsters--Our color monsters help us learn about colors and rhyming words.  They are a lot of fun!

Curriculum Guidelines - the State Dept. of Education has a set of guidelines and skills I am required to teach throughout the year.  If
you would like a copy please let me know.

D

Discipline - My discipline style is loving and caring, but firm.  I expect students to be responsible for their own actions, while I
understand that they are young and need guidance and modeling of correct behavior.  Most of my discipline occurs in the classroom.  I
prefer to be the one who helps my students understand that their behavior has consequences and show them other ways of behaving.
Office visits are reserved for physical violence, repeated behavior that interrupts the learning of the class, or other severe incidents.  If
I have an ongoing problem, I will call you to set up a conference to help your child become successful.

Dismissal - School is released each day at 11:20 - 11:25 and 3:05 - 3:10.  Please be prompt in picking your child up.  Child anxiety
can run pretty high when one child is the last one to be picked up.  If for any reason you are running late please call the school office
at 390-8585 so they can let me know. Dress  your child in comfortable clothing that is OK to mess up (we are quite messy sometimes)
and tennis shoes.  We are constantly climbing, walking, running, and dancing.  Please make sure your child is wearing shoes that will
 protect them.

 E

Extra Clothes - AT ALL TIMES please keep a full change of clothes in a zip lock baggie to be kept your child's backpack for “just in
case.” I will not attend to your child’s toileting needs (except for buttoning pants). I will call you if the need arises to come and assist
 your child.

My email at home is kyoung@cnpschools.org.  I check it everyday!

We will encourage each other to do our best.

We will recognize every effort and applaud it.

 F

Folder - Your child will bring home a weekly folder.  Please return it the following day.

Fun. Fun, Fun!!! We will have so much fun together this year.

Many new friends will be made this year!

read labels and send healthy snacks on your child’s special day.  Good snacks might be fruit, veggies, peanut butter crackers, etc.  All
snacks must have nutritional value.

Homework - Your child will bring home a homework backpack occasionally.  These backpacks are designed to create a fun way for
little ones to learn about homework.  All of the backpacks will have activity cards for you and your child to complete.  We will send
more infomration reagarding these backpacks at a later time.  We also ask that you read to your child daily.  I will send activities for
you to do daily on the Parent/Child Activities monthly.  This page will also be available on this web site.

Your extra help at home really makes a difference!

We will help each other whenever possible.

I

Independence - is always a goal.

Illness - Please do not send your child to school sick.  I will send them home. Sending a sick child to school is not only difficult for the
child, but can also easily infect others in our class. Please do not share your child's illness with others. Your child needs to be fever,
vomit and/or diarrhea free for 12 hours before returning to school.

J

Jackets - Please remember to send jackets each day .  We do go outside on cool days.

K

"Kindness costs nothing but gains everything."

The Kissing Hand will be our first book to read.  Be sure and kiss the palm of your child's hand before you leave on Tuesday, August
 14.  I will do the rest.

L

Label all clothing your child brings or wears to school.  (jackets, backpacks, extra clothes, etc.) That will help your child's things get
 back home.

M

Medication--I am not allowed to administer any medication in the classroom.  The office will provide you a medication form to fill
out.  You may want to have a couple of these on hand.  You are welcome to stop by the office and pick up a couple forms before you
 need them.

Media Center--where we go to check out books.

Money - If you send any money to school with your child it MUST be in the baggie or envelope with a note telling the amount and
what the money is to be used for.

Magic Triad - We use a gentle touches, kind words and smiles. We will not laugh or make fun of another’s person’s mistakes nor use
 sarcasm or putdowns.

“Mistakes are okay as long as you learn from them.”

“If you can’t make a mistake you can’t make anything.”

Motor skills are something we address each day.  We have gross motor and fine motor activities everyday.

Music is an important part of our classroom. We love to sing and dance!

Manners - we work on these all day, everyday.

N

Notes are required for a change in transportation from school to home.

Never a dull moment!!

Nighttime - remember our kids need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. A well  rested child is better able to focus, play, cooperate and
 learn.

Nourishment - A well nourished child is better able to focus, play, cooperate and learn.

Nursery Rhymes--We will learn a nursery rhyme every two weeks.  Please help your child say these at home.

O

Outstanding!  You are a great parent. Thank you in advance for all of the support that you will give to our class.

P

Play is what our classroom looks like, but we know we're really learning both academic and social skills.

Party Money--students may bring $10.00 party money for our three class parties.  Since we cannot have any homemade goodies, this
will help us get store-bought goodies.

Pre-K  is a VERY important year.

Pre-K Pick-up--Please pick up your child in the Pre-K pickup line.  Pull forward to the green post in a single file line.  Pull up closely
to the vehicle in front of you.  Please stay inside your vehicle so we can walk your child to your vehicle.  We will open the door and
help the child inside.  If he/she cannot buckle, please pull forward (past the green post) and park on either side of the drive to get out
and buckle your child.  The first few days will seem like chaos, but in a few weeks we will be able to load all Pre-K students within
about 10 minutes.  Thank you for your patience.

Pre-K Procedures - I strive to be very organized and very precise about the procedures of our classroom.  If you ever have any
questions concerning the procedures of the room please don’t hesitate to talk to me.  Everything we do looks like play but believe me,
 we are learning.

Q

Questions - anytime you have one, please give me a call or write to me.

R

Raincoats--Please send your child a raincoat that will button and has a hood.  We are unable to carry umbrellas in the rain because
other students may be poked.  We have to walk a long way when it is raining.  A plastic raincoat will keep your child dry better than
an umbrella.  (That is if we ever get rain.)

Report Cards - Report Cards will be sent every nine weeks. We have responsibilities to each other, our teachers and ourselves.

We will recognize every effort and applaud it.

READ - Read to your child daily.

 S

Safety Tips--We will learn how to be safe in different situations this year.  Please review the safety tips at home with your child.  We
will discuss:  fire safety, stranger danger, water safety, car seat safety, etc.  If you or someone you know has a job in an occupation
that would benefit our children to learn about, please let me know.

Show and Tell - I will send a schedule of Show and Tell times and dates.  Show and Tells must be educational in some way.  We will
begin Show and Tell with your child telling us:  "Hello, my name is ___________.  My Show and Tell is ______________.  We can
learn __________ from my Show and Tell."  After they get comfortable sharing, they can make up their own information.  Please help
your child prepare for Show and Tell by practicing what they will say in front of the class.

Speech/Language Screening--if you have any concerns about your child's speech, please let me know.

Supplies--please check the wish list for items needed in the classroom.  I have sticky notes on the door of the classroom and a list on
this website as well.

Snack -  We will have a snack sign-up at Parent Day.  We will have healthy snacks for the first two weeks of school.  Please do not
send any item that has sugar as the main ingredient.  All juices must be over 50% juice.

Social skills are something we work on each day.

Your support is very valuable - thank you.

Sacks - Wal-Mart, etc plastic sacks- please send them because we always need them!

Self Esteem - we will work on building positive self esteem daily.

Shoes - Please make sure to send your child in shoes that are comfortable for play.  Sandals or tennis shoes are great.  Flip flops or slip
ons are not a good idea because the children have a very difficult time keeping them on.  We will be running, climbing, jumping, and
playing everyday.  Thanks for your help with this issue.

T

Your child MUST be FULLY toilet-trained!  If your child cannot take care of his/her toileting needs I will contact you to come assist.

U

Unique - We will value one another as unique and special individuals.

Understanding - Kids say the darndest things - please keep in mind - I’ll believe half of what your kiddo's say about you if you believe
half of what they say about me! HA HA!

V

We welcome visitors who come to our class and tell us about their jobs or special things. Please let me know if you would like to
come share your job or know someone that would speak to our class about theirs.  I try to schedule these so they coincide with the
subjects we are studying, but we can do them at other times too.

We also welcome volunteers.  If you have some extra time in a day and would like to come and volunteer to work with the children
please let me know.

We will value one another as unique and special individuals.

Weekly Newsletter - Most Mondays I will send a newsletter home explaining the plans for the week.  If there is anything your child
needs in the following weeks I will try to plan ahead so that you will know in plenty of time.  It is SO important that you read your
 child's note every week. .

Wipes - We go through many, many wipes! We need both Clorox and Wet wipes.

Water - It is very important to stay well hydrated throughout the day.  We have a water fountain in our classroom that the students
may use at any time except our direct instruction time.  Please help them remember to get plenty of water.  We will be having "Party"
