Dear Parents,
As we enter into this Advent season, I pray that yours will be
peaceful as you prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas. This
is a busy time at school and there are many things going on about
which I want to inform you. Please check the TeacherWeb calendar
often for dates and events. I will update “Mrs. Gisler’s Reminders”
often, so check it as well.

In religion, each day, we pray an Advent prayer and select a virtue
to work on for the day. We have, also, had the Vocation Chalice and
have been praying for vocations. As we continue our study of the
Israelites in the Old Testament, we will also prepare for
Reconciliation next week. Extra projects include writing the morning
prayers for January and a special, secret writing project for our
Kindergarten Buddies.

Our trip to Colonial Manor this week went very well. It was a
beautiful day for walking and the students enjoyed it thoroughly.
Thank you to Mrs. Durland, Mrs. Frisillo, and Mrs. King for walking
with us. The students adapted immediately and had a grand time with
the elders. They made Santas, Advent wreathes, sang songs and some
played the piano. The elders enjoyed it and it warmed my heart to
see the students so open and giving to them.

It is our policy that students may not give gifts to their buddies at
school. We will make an ornament for the buddies and we will have a
cookie exchange. Students will bring a cookie for their buddy on
December 17th.

In social studies, we have been working on map and globe skills.
In addition, we are reviewing everything we’ve studied thus far.
Small groups created story boards on an assigned first semester topic
and are creating PowerPoint presentations in the computer lab,
complete with graphics, animations and transitions. We will finish
them next week and present them on the Smart Board in the classroom.
We will on alternate days between now and Christmas vacation study
Mesoamerica.

Students are being encouraged to bring coats for the Coats for Kids
drive. Mrs. Thalken reported yesterday that when she volunteered at
Catholic Charities, she gave out fifty coats and turned away 150
people due to the lack of coats. Please scour your closets for
gently used coats and send them to school with your child. If you
are able, children’s coats are on sale at many stores.

Dates to remember:
December 8	Mass	Feast of the Immaculate Conception
December 10	Reconciliation
December 11	No Mass
December 9	Permission Slip Due for Franciscan Villa
                (drivers needed)

December 18	Popcorn, Pillow, and Polar Express Day
(bring your pillow and a popped bag of popcorn)

Whew!!! Teaching does still continue through all this! :-)

Service Hour Information
Always remember Works of Mercy
for those folks less fortunate than ourselves
- feeding the poor - clothing the poor
- sheltering the homeless - befriending the stranger in need
- visiting the sick - visiting the imprisoned
(Matthew 25: 31-37)

Criteria for service projects should go beyond family service, be
offered for non-profit endeavors, and should not offer monetary
compensation.
Stick with non-profit locations. Students are not supposed
to "serve" as free labor for profit organizations around town. Non-
profit service sites include:
•	Camps
•	Churches
•	Schools
•	Libraries
•	Nursing homes
•	Hospice centers
•	Hospitals
•	Charities established to serve the poor
•	Organizations supporting a defined cause to help others.
Christian service experiences are an extension of the help we offer
our families. Credit is given to help extended beyond the family.
Always help your family, but search for service experiences outside
the family for credit.

Individuals in crisis may provide a good source of service. This may
include, helping the elderly with strenuous tasks, as well as the
disabled, or temporarily laid up persons due to serious health
issues. Check with your teacher if you are unsure.

Dear Parents,
Today we had our Harvest Stew and all was much enjoyed by the
children. They helped with the preparation and enjoyed the smell all
morning, much like savoring the smell on Thanksgiving Day. :-)
Thank you for your help and contributions.
Tuesday we will spend time with our Buddies in the morning. It
was necessary, today, for me to postpone our visit tomorrow to
Colonial Manor to Tuesday, December 1. My aunt, the last of her
generation, passed away over the weekend and I will attend the
funeral tomorrow afternoon. She was the last of eighteen aunts and
uncles on my mother's side. It is the end of and era. I am sorry
for the postponement. Permission slips are going home today and must
be returned by tomorrow, so that I can do the paperwork before
Thanksgiving. I will need walkers on December 1st from 1:!5 to
2:45. Thank you for your understanding.
As you celebrate this Thanksgiving time, know that I will be
praying for your families. May you be blessed with joy, abundance,
and peace. I count you and each of your children among my great and
bountiful blessings. Happy Thanksgiving! Evy Gisler
