Announcements

May 14, 2012

We have 8 school days left. Our year is quickly coming to an end, however, my Kinderkids have a love for learning. We will stay busy as we finish up math and phonics.

Super Kid's Day/Relay Recess was great. A big thank you to parents who volunteered and helped make this a success. Ms. Potter and our WES staff did a great job of making this a fun day! I heard we raised over $3,000 to help find a cure for cancer! Wow!

This will be the last week of reading homework. Please take time to enjoy your emerging reader. As I check report cards, I am amazed at the growth in your child in so many areas. Their ability tonot only know the ABC's, but to blend the sounds to read and spell is fantastic!

There will be a short parent meeting about Pre-1st and First Grade Expectations on Wednesday, May 16 at 5:00 held in Mrs. Hale's classroom.

T-shirts for graduation will go home next week. Please have your child wear the shirt to school on WEDNESDAY, May 23with denim. They may wear jeans, jean shorts, jean capris or jean skirts. Your child will receive their cap on the 23rd in the classroom. And remember to charge those batteries for cameras and video cameras!

I hope you enjoyed the Mother's Day booklet. I thought they were very cute and sweet.

Please return library books this week.
No school this Friday, May 18th.
Again, I want to thank you for all that you have done this year. I couldn't have done it without you!

Enjoying the moments,

Mrs. West

Let's have a GREAT week!
Mrs. West

Hola families,

Each month we will be saying hello in a different language as we practice greeting each other and visitors to our room. Our greeting for this month is Spanish so be prepared to hear your child say "hola" to you.

Last week we celebrated the 10th day of school with Zero the Hero! He brought a gift to all of the Kinderkids. He is character who will get to visit our class on all days that end in "zero" until our 100th day when we will have a smartie party!

We made tasty "lemon licks" last week. This week we will have "octopus" for our cooking experience.

Beginning this week, I will be introducing a new sight word for the students to learn. We will have a new sight word each week. I encourage you to make a set of flashcards to help your child recognize these words by sight rather than sounding them out. Our first sight word is "I".

Wow! It's September already and we are learning so much. We can say our vowels and this week we will focus on the vowel "O". Your child may bring something that starts with letter O tomorrow since we didn't have school yesterday. Ollie Oxygen is our science quirkle. We will also continue working on recognizing color words. On Wednesday, you may have your child wear something blue.

This week we will be learning Expectation #3: We will use good manners saying "please", "thank you" and "excuse me" and allow others to go first. Our school counselor, Mrs. Conklin, will begin visiting our classroom this week as well.

Dear Families,

We have completed our first full week. The KinderKids will continue to learn/practice procedures for our classroom for several weeks. We are gradually adding new material every day.

Thank you for sending snacks & drinks on your snack day! Because we have a late lunch, this mid-morning snack helps our tummys to not get so "rumbly".

And thanks to so many of you for volunteering to help with ingredients for our cooking experiences. We will make our first one this week. Lemon Licks are on the menu for Friday.

We are running low on our band-aid supply, so if you would like to send band-aids for us to use at school that would be great! Skinned knees happen a great deal this time of year.

This week we will focus on Expectation #2 which states: We will not laugh at or make fun of another person's mistakes nor use sarcasm or putdowns.

We will begin our Phonics/Reading series this week. We will start with the letter 'Ll'. We will focus on activities to help reinforces the sound of L"and we will begin the wonderful process of listening and recognizing individual sounds in words.

I will also be introducing a new science character each week. This week we will meet Lindy Light. We will be experimenting with light this week.

Please help your child find something from home that begins with 'Ll' (it can be a picture from a magazine/computer or the real thing) to bring to school on Newsday Tuesday (Show and Tell). Examples for letter L: lipstick, lock, leaf, lotion, lion, lock.

Our color word for the week is yellow. Remember to wear yellow on Wednesday.

Please make note of a calendar change. The Elementary School has changed the Grandparent's Day celebration from September 9th to November 22nd. We love our Grandparents and cannot wait to have them visit us.

It is going to be a LOVELY week!

Welcome to Kindergarten! We are off to a great start. We have a great class.

This weeks theme is Apples. We will learn about some different kinds of apples, taste some apples, due some apple art and on Friday we will be making applesauce. It will be yummy.

We are working on learning rules and procedures. The students are doing great with these. We are also working on writing our first names correctly, using capital and lower case letters. We will also begin with our Math. We will be exploring some math manipulative and learn how to correctly write the numbers 1-5. Practicing at home would be great.

On Friday, your child brought home a folder full of forms. Please fill those out and return as soon as possible.

Everyday you child will be bringing home a green STAR folder. All papers will be sent home in the STAR folder. Please look at the folder each night, discuss the papers as well as your child's behavior chart. Sign and return the folder each day.

Remember, the Kindergarten parent meeting is Tuesday at 5:00. You will learn more about what your child will experience this year and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. I will have a sign up sheet available for you to sign up for Parent/Teacher conferences and also to sign up to help with classroom parties. I hope to see you there.

Have a great week!
