Homework AB Calculus

WEEK 1/4 - 1/8
Monday 1/4: 5.1 Day 1 Estimating area under the curve
HW: #1 Estimate the area under the curve f(x) = 2x - x2 on the interval [0,2] using 4 subintervals: (a) use LRAM (b) use RRAM (c) use MRAM and (d) save room for tomorrow we will add the trapezoid method
#2 Estimate the area under the the curve f(x) = 1/x on the interval [1,3] using 4 subintervals: parts a - d same as #1

NOTE: each part should have a picture with the rectangles drawn in and the appropriate formula written in function notation first then the answer

ANSWERS: #1 (a) LRAM = 1.25 (b) RRAM = 1.25 (c) MRAM = 1.375 (d) T = 1.25  #2 (a) LRAM = 1.283 (b) RRAM = 0.95  (c) MRAM = 1.089 (d) T = 1.117

Tuesday 1/5: 5.5 Trapezoid Method
& 4.5 Linearization w/ Approx.
HW go back to last nights homework and do part d on both #1 and #2 AND Linearization handout

Wednesday 1/6: 5.1 Day 2 Approximating Area with Data
HW page 271 #'s 16, 18(add MRAM to problem),19, 28 AND page 312 #'s 11 and 12 (watch the units on both on #11 you will need to calculate the area of each trapezoid individually because the time intervals are not the same - you cannot use the shorter formula)

ANSWERS: #16 (a) LRAM = 87 in (b) RRAM = 87 in, #18 (a) LRAM = 3490 ft (b) RRAM = 3840 ft  Average = 3665 ft (c) MRAM = 4060 ft  #28 (a) Upper = 758 gallons and lower = 543 gallons (b) upper = 2363 gallons and lower = 1693 gallons (c) best case = 32.27 hours and worst case = 31.44 hours (YOU MUST show your work on part c)

OMIT 19 part b only do part (a) and they want you to do #19 with the same directions as #18

on page 312 #11 be sure to read note above about #11 and #12 set up trapezoid and you get 162 but the units would be seconds * m/h so what do you need to multiply by to cancel the time out and get just miles?

Thursday 1/7: Derivative QUIZ
5.2 Day 1 Sigma Notation connected to Rieman Sums and Integrals
HW page 282 in the quick review #'s 1 - 10

Friday 1/8: 5.2 Day 2 Integral Terminology, NINT program, Evaluate w/ Area Formulas
HW page 282 #'s 1 - 6 (use calc to find value of intergal), 7- 31odd and   - you need to draw a graph with the appropriate area shaded for each problem (note check answers in the back of the book but you need Work to support each answer - yes even on the easy ones!)

WEEK 1/11 - 1/15
Monday 1/11: 5.2 Day 3 Using Symmetry & Transformations to Evaluate Definite Integrals and 5.3 Day 1 Integral Properties
HW page 283 #'s 34, 36, 47-56 (omit 52,53) AND page 290 #'s 1 - 5 odd (you must show the properties being used - not answers only!)

Tuesday 1/12:

Wednesday 1/13:

Thursday 1/14:  TEST 5.1 - 5.3 all, 5.5, and 4.5

Friday 1/15:
