Ethics Homework

Note Well for ALL Homework assignments:
All work must be done NEATLY, legibly.
Scratchouts are not allowed.
Do not turn in papers with frayed edges.
NEVER do homework during class: it will not be counted.
All homework must be done on a computer or typewriter, unless otherwise indicated.
Unless indicated otherwise, homework should be about 1.5 pages in length, double-spaced.
When doing research on the internet, you must give your source(s).
FIVE POINTS will be subtracted for each day homework is not turned in when due.  
Since a maximum of TWENTY points is given to each homework, if the paper is not turned in after four days,
 NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN.



ETHICS HOMEWORK 


Due Thursday, 8/20/09:
Explain how we can view a human person from a theological, philosophical, anthropological and existential point of view.
[As an exception, this paper may be done in one page]


Due Friday, 8/21/09:
Answer the following questions: [ONE page]
1. What is a human act?
2. What is required that we might have a truly human act?
3. What are some of the impediments that can get in the way of our act being truly human?
4. What do we mean by alleviating and aggravating circumstances?

Due Monday, 8/24/09:
Two articles must be presented which show two different ethical issues.  Follow the format indicated on pages 4-5 of Notes [Introduction].  Answers may be written in pen this time.


Due Tuesday, 8/25/09:
1. Explain the three levels of conscience and how they differ from one another.
2. Why must we always follow our conscience?
3. What is the Church's role in guiding conscience? 

Due Thursday, 8/27/09:
Present the case "The Good Samaritan", answering the questions on page CV 2.

Due Tuesday, 9-1-09
Synthesize in one page the teachings in your book on the Fundamental Option and Sin.


Due Friday, 9-4-09:
Study Notes, page M4,  The Double Effect Principle.
Come up with at least two examples from your own experience [or that of others] which are cases of two effects resulting from the same act, one good, the other bad, in which the good is intended and the bad is not intended but is a simple by-product of the good act. [This should not require more than a half page, but should require some good thinking on your part.]

Covering Moral Relativism, Fund. option, Sin, Law, all material in Medical Ethics up to Euthanasia.

Note Well: You must use at least one of the principles we have learned in class to solve this case [Double Effect; Ordinary and Extraordinary Means] and show how they are applicable.

4) Name some of the cures already obtained by using:

Adult stem cells
Be sure you note your internet source(s).

Present two topics you would like to work on for your research paper.  No more than two students may have the same topic, so if more are presented today, we will draw straws to see who can do them.

Each student must present a one-page outline of how he/she hopes to develop the topic chosen for research.  These outlines may be done in pen.
