Textbooks: Langenscheidt “Sowieso” Book III and Workbook 1

Workbook and Textbook

This class will focus on oral and written communication in German. It will also introduce some new grammar topics. There will be daily oral review of questions. Eventually those questions will increase and be expanded until there is a full conversation going on. The student’s ability will increase as they learn grammar rules and begin building their sentences. This will enhance the conversation even more.

At the end of the first semester and on into the second semester we will combine the communication with more and more composition.

The text for the class is “Sowieso” Textbook and Workbook III

There is also a required workbook that goes along with the text.

There will be weekly vocabulary quiz. We will take about 10 new words new words from the chapter and each week I will choose about 5 of them and a bonus phrase to quiz the students over in class.

There will be a test at the end of each chapter or sections of smaller chapters. Between tests there will be numerous quizzes (some announced, some unannounced) and homework assignments.

1. Course Expectations/Requirements:

a. Complete assignments in the Arbeitsbuch (Workbook)

b. Written Homework Assignments

c. Contributions and participation in the class discussion

d. Vocabulary Quizzes

e. Tests

f. **Come to class prepared and ready to learn something new

2. Next German course in sequence: One of the German Literature Course:

Survey of German Literature or

Contemporary German Literature

3. Grading - All assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. will be worth 100 percentage points. At the end of each quarter I will average all of the student’s tests grades and then I will average the other grades they have received in this class.

For example: If a student had an 88% test average and a 79% quiz, homework, assignment average, this is how I would figure their grade:

88

88

+79 = 85% or a “B”

So tests are worth 2/3 of the student’s overall grade. All other assignments are worth 1/3 of their overall grade.

Grading scale for the class is the standard 10 point scale: 100-90 A, 89-80 B, 79-70 C, 69-60 D, 59 and below F.

I would make a few suggestions for study and keeping up with the class: Have a system for learning the vocabulary. Take daily notes on what is being said in class, even and especially when it seems repetitive and boring. Write down anything I write on the board or what I show on a power point presentation. Ask questions about what you do not understand. Take part in German conversations in class.
