House Design

Four Clients:

A) A young couple who have chosen to not have children. She works at home as a graphic designer, and needs an office clients can visit without going through the house.

B) A middle aged couple (50 years old) who have no children at home, but have elderly parents (85, 82) who are living with them.

C) A family with  2 adults and 5 children from 2 to 14 years old. One of the adults has SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and needs lots of sunshine in the winter months.

D) A blended family, with 2 adults, and four children from two previous marriages (2 children from each of 2 previous marriages) who live here every other week, and are with their other parents the other weeks.

Four Locations:

1) In Summerland BC, in a dry desert overlooking the Okanagan Valley.
2) On Cape Breton Island, NS, on the shore of Bras d"Or lake. There are many rock outcroppings on the land.
3) In Calgary, on an in-fill lot between two existing buildings. The lot is only 5 metres wide, but 60 metres deep.
4) In an old treed suburb in Port Credit, south of Lakeshore - a house has been torn down from the lot, and the family will build a new one.

All of the families share an interest in the ideals of organic architecture and Frank Lloyd Wright, and want to see some of his principles in their house.
The families have chosen to have an architect designed house so that they can take advantage of new green building ideas and technologies, and minimize their footprint on the world, even as they are building. Think Canadian, think local.

Good Morning, Class.
Today, as a timed task, I would like you to set up the following in InDesign:

Open a new file, a page 8.5 x 5.5 inches (140 x 216 mm). It should be a tall, thin page.
You may choose your own margins.
You must divide the page into 2 equal columns.
Onecolumn must befull of lines of text only. One column must contain 8 lines of text, and a photograph of a Cawthra teacher.Use Lorem Ipsum.
The page number should be page 24, and it should include today's date, September 24.
Use a quote from or about the teacher as a title or headline for your page. Put your name on the last line of the second column..

Once you have competed these tasks (on your own), raise your hand and I will come look over your shoulder to see it.
After that, you can continue on your own work.

Thanks. Try to have a little fun with this, if you can.

In October, we will be taking a field trip to this exposition. There is a section for students online, and a chance to win a scholarship to a design program in Canada. Worth a look.
