Border Crossing Information for Parents and Students

School Groups Traveling to the USA
As of September 8, 2007

Entering the USA - Identification of Canadian Citizens
Canadian citizens can enter the USA using their valid Canadian
passport, or
birth certificate plus one form of photo identification. These can include:
Drivers license, Student ID card, OHIP/health card with photo. People
travelling with a Canadian Citizenship card must have a photo on it and
it must
bear a resemblance. While U.S. authorities currently do not have a legal
requirement that Canadians carry a passport, Foreign Affairs Canada
strongly
urges all Canadians travelling to the United States to obtain and carry a
Canadian passport before leaving Canada. It is the only document that
conclusively proves that you are a citizen of Canada with the right to
return
to Canada. Remember that a Canadian passport is still the best
internationally
accepted evidence of your Canadian citizenship and the best possible
photo
identification.

Entering the USA - Identification of Permanent Residents and Landed
Immigrants
Persons with landed immigrant status in Canada must obtain a
Non-Immigrant Visa
in order to enter the U.S. (except for citizens of countries that have a visa
waiver agreement with the U.S.) Visas can be purchased through the
US Embassy
or a Consulate. Temporary Visas may be purchased at a US border
crossing
station at a cost of $12.00 US

Non Canadian citizens must also have a valid passport from their
country of
citizenship. If their citizenship is in a country that has a Visa Waiver
Agreement with the US, then they must have a special type of passport
called a
machine readable passport - for more info on this, go to: http://
travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html

PLEASE NOTE:
All non Canadian citizens should be prepared to be fingerprinted at the
border
at a cost of $6.00 US.

Entering the USA - Identification of students under 18 years of age
Regarding students under 18 years of age - adults (chaperones) who
are not
parents or guardians should have the children's appropriate
identification
(including a photo ID). The type of ID depends on whether they are a
Canadian
Citizen or Landed Immigrant. Also, the teachers must have written
permission
from the parents or guardians to supervise the children. The permission
letter
should include addresses and telephone numbers where the parents
or guardians
can be reached. Please note that if children are using a passport as
their ID
they must have their own passport rather than be an addition to a
parent’s
passport.

Returning to Canada – Canadian Citizens
Canadian citizens are required to have two forms of identification
including
photo ID.

Returning to Canada - Permanent Residents / Landed Immigrants
Permanent Residents / Landed Immigrants in Canada require valid
passport and as
of December 31, 2003 a Permanent Resident Card in order to return to
Canada.
Anyone without their valid Permanent Resident Card will not be
permitted to re-
enter Canada. They will be required to contact the nearest Canadian
embassy or
consulate to obtain a temporary document (which cannot be
guaranteed) for a fee
of $50.00, and will have to return home at their own expense.

As a parent/guardian, it is your responsibility to ensure your child has
the
proper documentation to leave and re-enter the country. Here are some
related
web sites for more information.

Passports – Future Travel to the USA
Though passports are the document of choice for travel, Canadian
citizens do
not currently require a passport to travel to the United States. However,
Passport Canada encourages Canadians who are considering
travelling outside
Canada to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely accepted proof of
Canadian identity and citizenship.
On April 5th, the United States Government announced the Western
Hemisphere
Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all visitors to and from the Americas,
including Canadian citizens, to present a passport or other accepted
secure
document (still to be determined by the United States) to enter the
United
States by December 31st, 2007.
The WHTI will be implemented in three phases as follows:
December 31st, 2005 - All citizens (including Canadians and
Americans)
transiting in the United States en route to or from the Caribbean,
Bermuda,
Central or South America will require passports
December 31st, 2006 - All citizens (including Canadians and
Americans)
traveling by air or sea to, from or through the United States will require
passports
December 31st, 2007 - All citizens (including Canadians and
Americans)
traveling by air, sea or land to, from or through the United States will
require passports
