SNC 1P0 Homework

Week of January 5th

MONDAY:  Microscope Skills

  • Today we reviewed skills involved in using a microscope.   If you missed class, you will need to get the handout and complete the lab investigation afterschool or during your lunch.
  • HOMEWORK:  Study for tomorrow's quiz on Parts of the Microscope.  It is the written portion of the "Microscope Operator's License".  You will also do the practical test.

TUESDAY:  Microscope License testing and Science in the News (DNA)

  • Today we completed both the practical test and the written test for the Microscope Operator's license.  If you passed both parts, youwill get yuor license tomorrow and be able to complete the lab.  If you did not pass, you will have the opportunity to try again tomorrow.
  • We also did a "Science in the News" exercise that looked at DNA and what it is.  You must complete this for homework.
  • HOMEWORK:  COmplete the "Compound Microscope" fill-in-the-blank worksheet.

WEDNESDAY:  Looking at Cells - Lab Investigation

  • Today we will look at cheek cells and onion cells in order to see the difference between the two.  You will be required to complete a formal biological diagram of each of these cells following the guidelines we learned in class today.  There will be time in class tomorrow as well.

THURSDAY:  Drawing Cells - Lab Investigation

  • Today we will finish the biological drawings of a cheek cell and an onion cell under the microscope.
  • HOMEWORK:  Quiz tomorrow - be sure to study about DNA and how a microscope works ("e" lab)

FRIDAY:  Cell division

  • Today we will learn about how a cell divides through Mitosis and Meiosis.

MONDAY:  Science Fiction and Science Fact

  • Today we started watching the movie "Mission to Mars"  to see what is fiction and what is fact!
  • Don't forget to your news article for tomorrow!

TUESDAY:  Science in the News

  • Mars News
  • Mission to Mars - today we looked at bit more at how Hollywood stretches science in science fiction.

THURSDAY:  Life of the Stars

  • Today we looked at different types of stars, how they are born and how they evolve.

FRIDAY:  Space Quiz!

  • Make sure your notebook is up to date because you can use it to complete your test today.

MONDAY:  Mars Mission Follow-up

  1. Complete mission reflections
  2. begin mission report (fill in template)

TUESDAY:  Mars Mission Follow-up

  1. Science in the News
  2. Preparing questions for Mars Mission Press conference
  3. Mission reports

WEDNESDAY:  Mars Mission follow-up

  • Finish your Mars mission report for tomorrow's press conference.  One rep from each teamwill report. 
  • Have your questions ready for the press conference tomorrow.  Everyone must ask at least one questions.

THURSDAY:  Press Conference

  • Your reports are due at the end of class or first thing tomorrow morning.
  • Those who did not go on the trip must prepare a news report which is due next Tuesday.

FRIDAY:  Mars quiz

  • TOday we will have or quiz (on material from our Missio preparations)
  • We will also update our portfolios and notebooks.

Week of November 4th

TUESDAY:  Science in the News and Review

  • Be sure to complete the practice test.
  • Prepare your study sheets for teh Unit test on Thursday.

WEDNESDAY:  Take Your Kids to Work Day

TUESDAY:  Science in the News

  1. Complete the worksheet you received yesterday in class.

WEDNESDAY:  Atomic Theory

  1. Complete the chart on the backside of the "Atomic Theory" handout

THURSDAY:  Bohr-Rutherford Diagrams

  1.  Finish drawing the Bohr-Rutherford diagrams for the first 20 elements on the periodic table.  (the big sheet)
  2. Review for tomorrow's quiz - classifying matter and the atom.

FRIDAY:  Quiz day!

  1. Complete theBor-Rutherford diagrams.

 

Week of October 5th

MONDAY:  Particle Theory and States of Matter

  1. Today we worked on the states of matter and how the differ.  Be sure to complete the worksheets.

TUESDAY: Solids, Liquids and Gases

  1. Today we watched a film on the four states of matter.  Be sure to complete the worksheet that goes with the video.
  2. We also started our summative project today.  Be sure to complete step one (describing particles in each of the six situations)

WEDNESDAY:  Particle theory

  1. Today we worked on step two, planning the posters and began the good copies.  The poster is due on Friday.  You will have some time to work on them in class tomorrow.

Thursday:  Particle Theory

  1. Today we finished up our Particle Theory posters and started working on Elements and Compounds.
  2. Complete questions # 1- 4 on p. 27 in your textbook.
  3. Read pp. 28-31 in text and do questions #1 - 5.
  4. Quiz tomorrow!

FRIDAY:  Elements, Compounds and mixtures

  1. Today we had our weekly quiz and updated our portfolios. 
  2. We also watched a film on Elements, COmpounds and Mixtures.  Be sure to complete the worksheet!

MONDAY:  Measurement and the Metric System

  1. Today we looked at measurement and estimation.  Be sure to finish the handout on the Metric System for homework;
  2. Tomorrow is Science in the News - be sure to bring in a news article!

TUESDAY:  Shoreline Clean up preparation

  1. Today we prepared for tomorrow's clean up of Cookesviller creek.  Don't foget to wear suitable shoes and bring work or rubber gloves.
  2. Remember to bring in your signed permission forms and your signed student information sheets (yellow page).

WEDNESDAY:  Shoreline Clean up

Complete the worksheets on metric conversions and estimating and measureing.  You will need to hand these in on Monday. 

 

Week of September 8th

MONDAY:  Lab Equipment

For tomorrow, check out the newspaper - either online or on paper and find an article that relates to science in some way (it doesn't have to be an obvious connection).  Bring in the article because Tuesday is Newsday!

As well, be sure to get your new yellow sheet signed so that your folks know how our class works and how to use this website.

TUESDAY:  Using lab equipment (and Science in the News)

For homework tonight, be sure to get the yellow page signed from yesterday (if you have not yet done so). 

WEDNESDAY: Using Lab Equipment

  1. Today we are finishing the stations in which we learned to use the different pieces of equipment. 
  2. Remember that you will be tested on these skills so if you need more practice, be sure to take time tomorrow to practice and get help. 
  3. Tonight you can work on the Lab Equipment catalogue.

THURSDAY:  Lab Equipment

  1. Today we are finishing the lab equipment work.  You will have to hand in all the lab equipment worksheets tomorrow so be sure to work on them tonight.
  2. Remember - Tomorrow is quiz day!  Be sure to study the pieces of equipment - you will have to identify them and describe their use.

FRIDAY:  Quiz Day!

Today we will update our portfolio and practice with the bunsen burner.  We will have a practice test for the lab skills so we can get ready for next week.   If you are ready you can even get the test overwith!

 

 

 

 

Tonight homework is easy!

  1. You and your parents/guardians must read the General Science Policy (found on the Science Department website.  Access it from cawthrapark.com).  Also read the course expectations.  Have your folks either sign the last page of the policy document or write a note saying that they have read it.
  2. Go to the "Teacher" link on my home page.  What colour is my t-shirt?  Write it down on a scrap piece of paper and hand it in to me in class on Wednesday.
