Matthews is the mission scientist leading the MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of the STars) project. Described as an interstellar iPod, the MOST telescope has an aperture of only 15 cm, and is housed in a microsatellite of total weight of about 54 kg. But this 'orbiting suitcase' has become heavily packed with data since leaving home on a trip that has taken it 820 km above the Earth, on a virtual vacation to worlds hundreds of light years away. MOST is an ultraprecise stellar lightmeter, whose original one-year mission was 'asteroseismology' - probing the interiors of stars by observing subtle surface vibrations too small for even the largest earth-based telescopes to monitor over long periods. After over five years in orbit, MOST has extended its science broadly. Using data gathered by MOST, Matthews is writing a biography of our sun, forecasting the weather on planets beyond the solar system and searching for Terra Nova – alien ‘Earths’ around other stars.
An award-winning professor of astrophysics who teaches at the University of British Columbia, Matthews holds a BA from the University of Toronto and an MSc and PhD from the University of Western Ontario. An advocate of astronomy education and public outreach, he often appears on television as a guest expert. In 2006, Matthews was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada.
