Studies in Literature

“Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting.” -- Aldous Huxley

Why do we read? It seems like a simple question, but I find that the more I think about it the more it puzzles and eludes me. Why do we read? What is the place of reading in my life?

This course is your opportunity to struggle with this question. You will be reading lots and lots (and lots) and working with our class and individually to try to come to terms with what literature means to you. Through discussion, essay writing, seminar presentations and a self-directed inquiry paper, you will be asked to think deeply and critically about the art of writing and the experience of the reader.

Ultimately, this course will play a role in preparing you for university studies in the humanities by challenging you to read more carefully, think more deeply, and write more precisely about literature.

This directory is an index of indexes. It contains pointers to individual author guides or other cumulative documents that deal with specific writers. Admittedly, most of these authors are "literary." I have not included many authors from genres such as science fiction or romance.
