CHC2DOTues. Sept. 8 -- WELCOME BACK ! -- today I went over the course expectation sheet with the class; students received their course packages; we discussed what is history? why is history important?
Wed. Sept. 9 -- today we had the Grade 10 assembly in the first half of the period; we discussed the difference between fact, opinion and argument -- students copied a short note from an overhead and then they completed a review exercise on p. 4 in their package -- we started to take up the answers but will need to finish tomorrow
Thurs. Sept. 10 -- today I distributed the textbooks; we did a note taking exercise on two crises faced by PM Wilfrid Laurier -- students wrote notes on the Boer War (p. 43 - 44 in textbook) and the Naval Crisis ((p. 44 - 45) -- I showed students exemplars of completed notes that they could compare with their own notes
FOR HOMEWORK: Using pages 66 - 69 in your textbook, write summary notes on the background causes to World War One (M. A. I. N.) -- I will be doing a homework check tomorrow.
Fri. Sept. 11 -- today I did a homework check; I went over the points that the students should have included in their summary notes for each background cause (M. A. I. N.); we coloured in the map of Europe in 1914 showing the two
alliances (the Triple Entente vs the Triple Alliance)
Mon. Sept. 14 -- today we watched a video entitled The Long Fuse -- students made jot notes on various sections of the video -- we discussed each section as we went through the video -- check the Grade 10 Docs page for a summary note of the video and make a hardcopy for your notebook
Tues. Sept. 15 -- today students wrote a note entitled Road to War -- we went over pages 7, 8 & 9 in your package on how to write an analytical author referenced paragraph; students then worked in small groups to brainstorm the connections between the four background causes of WWI; students also had time to begin work on their analytical paragraph outline (pages 10 & 11 in package) on the most significant background cause which escalated the First World War
Wed. Sept. 16 -- today students had time to work on their analytical paragraph outlines on what they think is the most significant of the background causes (excluding the alliance system) -- your paragraph outlines are due on Mon. Sept. 21st
FOR HOMEWORK: Students should read pages 71 - 76 in the textbook and answer the questions from the overhead entitled Canada Prepares for War. This work should be completed for Fri. Sept. 18th.
Thurs. Sept. 17 -- today we started watching The Killing Ground -- students completed the worksheet on pages 13 - 14 in their package while viewing -- we will finish the video tomorrow; I checked over your rough drafts of your outlines
REMINDER: Make sure that you complete the homework which was assigned on Wednesday. (see above)
Fri. Sept. 18 -- today we finished watching The Killing Ground and took up the worksheet.
FOR HOMEWORK: Complete the worksheet on the trenches (p. 15 in packages) for Monday. Your analytical paragraph outline on your chosen background cause of WWI is due on Monday as well.
Mon. Sept. 21 -- today I collected your paragraph outlines on the background causes of WWI; we took up the last few questions from the worksheet for The Killing Ground; we also took up the homework on Canada Prepares for War and the trench worksheet
FOR HOMEWORK: Complete the worksheet on weapons (p. 16 in package) for tomorrow.
Tues. Sept. 22 -- today I took up the worksheet on weapons; students read pgs. 88 - 92 in textbook and wrote point form notes on the four battles (Ypres, Passchendaele, the Somme and Vimy Ridge) -- I also introduced the World War One Battles research project
FOR HOMEWORK: Finish your notes on the battles for tomorrow.
Wed. Sept. 23 -- today we were in the library starting our research for the World War One battles project -- continue working on your research at home; check the Grade 10 Docs page for useful websites for WWI
Thurs. Sept. 24 -- today students watched a Powerpoint presentation showing Pictures as a Primary Resource -- this slide show is meant to help you with the completion of your Battles project which is due on Mon. Oct. 5/09.
Continue working on researching your specific battle at home. Bring in any resources you have to class tomorrow.
Fri. Sept. 25 -- today I introduced the Historical Novel project to the class; students had time to meet with their group for the Battles project to discuss individual responsibilities
REMINDER: 1. The Battles project is due on Mon. Oct. 5/09. 2. Students should have their historical novel chosen by Fri. Oct. 9/09. Continue working on your Battles project at home and find an historical novel.
Mon. Sept. 28 -- today we were in the library for a workshop on how to do an APA formatted reference list and embedded citations; continue working on your specific battle at home -- make sure that everyone in your group has the opportunity to do some quotation cards, find pictures of your battle and do the analysis, contribute to the graphic organizer, etc.
Bring in any resources and notes on your specific battle tomorrow since we will have a work period in class.
Tues. Sept. 29 -- today students had time to work on their Battles projects in class; today was an early release day
Wed. Sept. 30 -- today students had time to work on their Battles projects in the computer lab
REMINDER: The Battles project is due on Mon. Oct. 5/09. Thurs. Oct. 1 -- today we had our last work period for the Battles project in the computer lab.
Fri. Oct. 2 -- today we watched two short videos on the homefront and the Halifax Explosion; I also did a short lecture onthe Conscription Crisis (p. 18 in package)
REMINDER: Your Battles project is due on Mon. Oct. 5/09.
Mon. Oct. 5 -- today I collected your Battles project; we wrote two short notes on the war coming to a close; we also coloured in the new countries established at the end of the war in 1919
FOR HOMEWORK: Students should read pages 21 - 22 in package on the Treaty of Versailles and answer the 4 questions on p. 22 for tomorrow.
Tues. Oct. 6 -- today we went over the Treaty of Versailles homework; students wrote a short note entitled The Peace Process; I introduced the assignment on p. 23 in your package -- students will be writing an author referenced paragraph on whether or not the Treaty of Versailles was successful based on the criteria of a successful treaty -- students worked in small groups discussing the terms of the treaty and completing the analysis matrix on p. 23
Your paragraphs are due on Tues. Oct. 13/09.
Wed. Oct. 7 -- today students watched a short video on the Winnipeg General Strike and they completed the worksheet on p. 24 in the package -- we took up the worksheet afterwards; we also wrote a short note on the results of the WGS; we also went over the conditions for soldiers who returned home from the war
REMINDER: Make sure that you have chosen an historical novel by Fri. Oct. 9/09.
Thurs. Oct. 8 -- today students completed the worksheet on p. 26 in their package entitled March to Autonomy; I also gave them a short note on how to answer identify and give the significance of various terms -- students should read pages 135
-- 137, 144 - 148, 152 - 153 in their textbook; then they should identify and give the significance for the following terms: prohibition, influenza epidemic, Frederick Banting (insulin), Pension Act, Indian Act, residential schools, League of Indians, xenophobia, Chinese Exclusion Act, Branch Plant system
Continue working on your Treaty of Versailles paragraph and complete the above homework.
Fri. Oct. 9 -- today students gave me the titled of their historical novel; I took up the homework on the worksheet entitled March to Autonomy; I also went over the Person's Case -- check the Grade 10 Docs page for an outline for our first test on WWI and the 1920's to be written on Fri. Oct. 16th
REMINDERS: 1. Make sure that you have your Treaty of Versailles paragraph ready to hand in on Tues. Oct. 13th; 2. Finish the historical significance for the 1920's terms (see yesterday)
Tues. Oct. 13 -- today I collected your Treaty of Versailles paragraphs; I also went over the historical significance of the 1920's terms that were assigned last Thursday -- I also went over the format of the test again
Wed. Oct. 14 -- today students wrote a short note on the 1920's and the Stock Market Crash (Oct. 29, 1929); we also had a short discussion about how the stock market works; students then started to complete the worksheet on p. 27 in their package entitled Background Causes to the Great Depression
FOR HOMEWORK: Study for our unit test on Friday.
Thurs. Oct. 15 -- today students finished the worksheet on the background causes to the Great Depression; they also read some letters written to PM Bennett and answered 5 questions; remaining time was spent studying for our test tomorrow

Mon. Oct. 19 -- today I introduced the 1930's Radio Play and students organized themselves into groups; we also watched a bit of Cinderella Man -- the true story of Jim Braddock who makes a comeback as a boxer during the Great Depression
Tues. Oct. 20 -- today students had a work period for their radio play -- they should continue researhing their specific topic at home and bring in their research notes tomorrow
Wed. Oct. 21 -- today students continued to work on their radio plays -- they should continue working on their specific tasks at home -- script writer, program, commercials, music, etc.
Thurs. Oct. 22 -- today students continued working on their radio plays -- they should continue working on their specific tasks at home -- script writer, program, commercials, music, etc.
Fri. Oct. 23 -- today students continued working on their radio plays -- the radio plays will be performed on Wednesday and Thursday of next week -- continue working on your specific tasks at home
Mon. Oct. 26 -- today students had another work period for their radio plays -- continue working at home -- tomorrow is our last work period -- you should be practising your radio plays so that they run smoothly
Tues. Oct. 27 -- today was the last day to practice the radio plays -- tomorrow we will begin the presentations; students were also assigned homework dealing with the end of the Depression -- Search for Solutions (p. 198 - 202)
Wed. Oct. 28 -- today we started the presentations of the radio plays -- students should complete the worksheet on p. 31 of their package (Why was Germany attracted to Hitler?)
Thurs. Oct. 29 -- today we continued with the presentations and groups did their mark negotiations
Fri. Oct. 30 -- today students watched a video entitled Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler -- I distributed a timeline of Steps to World War II and Jewish Persecution -- students should complete this worksheet for Monday
Mon. Nov. 2 -- today students wrote notes on Germany in the 1930's and Hitler's Rise to Power -- students had time to complete the timeline which we will take up tomorrow

Wed. Nov. 4 -- today we started watching From Blitzkrieg to the Bomb -- students completed a worksheet while watching the video
Thurs. Nov. 5 -- today students completed the worksheet on the War on the Homefront; students also wrote notes on the four battles involving Canadians [Hong Kong; Ortona/Operation Huskey; Dieppe and D-Day (Juno Beach)]
Fri. Nov. 6 -- today we finished watching From Blitzkrieg to the Bomb and took up most of the worksheet together
REMINDER: Bring in your money and permission forms for our fieldtrip to the Holocaust Centre on Tues. Nov. 17/09
Mon. Nov. 9 -- today we watched the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan -- American soldiers arriving on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion and then went over the details of the D-Day Invasion on June 6, 1944
FOR HOMEWORK: Students should complete the worksheet on Japanese Internment (p. 36 in package)
Tues. Nov. 10 -- today we wrote two short notes on the peace conferences at the end of WWII (Yalta & Potsdam); we also took up the four battles which were assigned last Thursday
Wed. Nov. 11 -- today we had our Remembrance Day assembly; we took up the Japanese Internment worksheet and finished taking up the War on the Homefront worksheet which was assigned last Thursday
Thurs. Nov. 12 -- today students were given a template to fill in while watching a slideshow which introduced the Holocaust
Fri. Nov. 13 -- today students started watching Escape from Sobibor -- the true story of a successful escape by 300 Jewish prisoners from a death camp -- we will need to watch the rest of the movie on Monday
REMINDERS: Historical Novel project is due on Wed. Nov. 18/09. We will be going on our Holocaust Centre fieldtrip on Tuesday.
Mon. Nov. 16 -- today we watched the end of Escape from Sobibor -- students will be writing a reflection on the movie and on our trip to the Holocaust Centre -- this assignment will be due on Fri. Nov. 27/09.
ANNOUNCEMENT: We will be writing our unit test on World War II on Mon. Nov. 23/09. I have posted an outline for the test on the Grade 10 Docs page. Start reviewing for the test now!

Thurs. Nov. 19 -- today we watched a documentary on the Cold War and completed the worksheet on p. 37 in your packages -- we took up the worksheet afterwards
Fri. Nov. 20 -- today I introduced the Post War project -- students will sign up for their topics on Monday; we also did some review for our unit test on World War Two to be written on Mon. Nov. 23/09.
