  "rava-ript".

----------
May 30th
• Website development continued.

----------

• Website marking scheme distributed to everyone. Make sure you check it versus your own site
to maximize your grade. Theoretically, you should be able to mark your site yourself and get an
accurate grade, assuming you are honest with yourself.
• Mr. Chute caves and extends the website assignment until Friday, June 6th.
• As the sites stand today, many of you would fail the assignment and Mr. Chute does not want
you to do poorly on this assignment.
• Final exam will now occur from Monday, June 9th to Friday, June 13th.

----------
May 28th
• Website construction continued.

• If you are still in Fireworks at this point, other that for corrections, you need to get into
  Dreamweaver NOW!

----------
May 23rd
• Website work continued
• For those of you using "image_slideshow.js" and "image_slideshow.css", go to the following
http://www.cawthratechnology.com/teacher/css/image_slideshow.css and save the file. I have
made considerably more notations on each line that should help eliminate the problems we
  have been encountering.

----------
May 22nd
• Website deadline extended to Friday, May 30th.
• Final exam will be Monday, June 2nd to Friday, June 13th. Muuhhahahhaha!!!

----------
May 16th
• Website work continued.
• OK. Here's what we're going to do: Today, you must work exclusively on your splash page. Let's
get that out of the way.
• To redirect to your main page place the following code snippet in the -head- section of your
  splash page:
• I'm going to have to regiment this project out so that you can all meet the ever moving deadline.
This is a tough assignment and I think many of you a digging a deep hole for yourselves and
  don't realize it.

----------
May 15th
• Website work continued
• At this point, you should have the bulk of your pages laid out. If not, you are seriously behind
and need to be working much harder. I would only characterize a handful of students in the class
who are currently working well enough to accomplish this website.

----------
May 14th
• Website work continued
• http://web.uvic.ca/akeller/pw406/l_howto.htm for some flash hints

----------
May 13th
• Website work continued. Project extended until Friday, May 23rd.
• Added a Flash rollover button tutorial on the downloads page.

----------
May 12th
• PD day. No school.

----------
May 9th
• Website work continued.

----------
May 8th
• All but 4 coffee table books are now completely finished with newly laminated covers. Nice!
• Coffee table books will be on display for Art Springfest next Thursday. They are yours to keep
  next Friday.
• Website development continued.
• A quick search by a student for a Flash effect resulted in an easy tutorial which the student then
tweaked into their own style. The student has never used Flash before. See? THIS IS WHAT I'M
TALKING ABOUT!!! A bit of research and whamo! You become a design genius.

----------
May 7th
• I have extended the website project by at least a week. I was away on the 6th and will be away
on the 9th as well. Also, Monday the 12th is an all day PD day so we lose another day. I know you
are all disappointed in this extension.
• Students were individually assisted with their layouts.
• Planning, planning, planning...I cannot emphasize this enough. You must know what you want
and where you want to place it on your design.
• Javascript --> You have to know exactly what effects you want to add. You should also have an
example site that does the same effect that you want. We can reverse-engineer from there.
• A lot of really "slick" effects are actually Flash movies which can generally be significantly more
complex than any Javascript effect. Look for simple effects. Complexity does not necessarily equal
good design. Again, find a site that does what you like and we'll reverse engineer from there.

----------
May 6th
• Looks like you more or less worked on your website despite other directions that were to be
given in my absence. Oh well. No harm done.

----------
May 5th
• Synced remote folders with local folders
• Walked through initial modification of "formmailer.php" file.

and marking. Also, they will be tastefully displayed at the Art Springfest on May 15th. You will
get your book to keep on May 16th.

----------
April 25th
• Slight re-jig of book covers to include a 1 pixel border to create a cutting line when printed
• Dreamweaver site set up again, this time much more smoothly. No issues other than the 8
slot maximum connections mystery. Site host ISP says there is no limit on connections server
side. Chute will check with Gaspar to see if there are client side restrictions on outbound FTP
  connections
• Last 30 minutes devoted to "Kids + Money", a documentary featured at this year's Hot Docs
film festival in Toronto. Interesting, wasn't it? Did you see elements of yourself or someone you
  know?
• All but 3 covers were finished printing by the end of the day. The 3 remaining are not within
specifications given or were incomplete. Please fix ASAP, Rina, Dustin, and Sarah.

----------
April 24th

----------
March 27th
• EQAO Literacy Test - No class.

----------
March 26th
• Short lesson on image resolution vs. print resolution.
• Photoshop works in pixels...and ONLY pixels. Unfortunately, printers work in dots. Dots are NOT
the same as pixels. A printer may use many dots to represent a single pixel. Therefore, we need a
way to translate pixels into dots. Enter Image Resolution.
• Image Resolution: The instructions given to a printing device about how large to draw each pixel
on the paper. It is a printing instruction about pixel size.
• For this book, images will require a resolution of 150ppi minimum. Bigger is better (generally).
• When creating/manipulating images for the book, get the largest images you can find.
• Students collected images for their books, making sure all pictures are meaningfully labeled and
  placed in a single folder.
• Grade 12 Drama students performed a short play for their class and ours in our room. Seriously.

----------
February 29th
• Late start day (on a Friday? What?)
• Editing continued

----------
February 28th
• This project is being extended Friday, March 7th. There are 4 reasons for this:
     1. Many of you are realizing how challenging and time-consuming it is to edit a story even when
it has been written for you. That's good...it means you're learning! (It gets easier, don't worry)
     2. A handful of class members did not think that when I said everyone has to cut their own video
(see February 15th) that it applied to them. Perhaps not listening the first time? Now is their
        chance to make good.
     3. I want you to feel comfortable with Final Cut Express and therefore I do not want a rushed job.
     4. I am simply too nice.
• Singing and dancing to rejoice the extension of this project.
• Editing continued

----------
February 27th
• Editing continued...time is getting tight.

----------
February 26th
• Editing continued

----------
February 25th

• Project in the can next week with final due date of Feb 29th

----------

• Demonstrated basic audio level (volume) editing and rubber-banding in FCE
• Explained how raising audio levels too high from original level may introduce too much noise into
  the audio track.
• Editing continued
• Audio recording sessions continued.

----------
February 19th
• Importing video
• Audio recording sessions
• Importing audio
• Editing begins in FCE

----------
February 18th
• Family Day - no school

----------
February 15th
• Audio recording sessions continued
• Video recording sessions continued
• Importing begins into iMovie for transfer to Final Cut Express (FCE)
• Slicing and dicing audio in Final Cut Express begins
• All students will edit their own story. (Import footage once, then file transfer it to other group
  members' computers)

----------
February 14th
• Audio recording sessions continued
• Remember that your audio levels during recording should AVERAGE -12dB. Peaking beyond is OK
as long as it is just occasionally.
• Video recording sessions continued

----------
February 13th
• Audio recording sessions started
• Video recording sessions started
• Some groups still completing their scripts

----------
February 12th
• Demonstrated the audio workstation in the kitchen. The software is called Audacity and is free
to download and use if you would like to play with it at home. Very easy program to use.
• Quick explanation of the two light kits that we will be using for the Children's story project.
• Scripts were to be completed with all directions as soon as possible.
• Audio recording should start today, one at a time.
• While waiting for an audio recording session, your group should begin taping the stories.

----------
February 11th
• Some students attempted to print their white balance matrix but the printer is acting strangely. It is
printing duplicates of some print jobs and not printing others at all. For now, all printing is
  suspended.
• Children's Story assignment handed out to class and explained.
• Students divided into 6 groups of 3 to create their children's story. Four groups have chosen a book
and have had it approved. Two groups appeared to accomplish very little today.
• Some groups have started entering all book text into a Word document that is formatted as a
standard video script (AUDIO in left column, VIDEO in right column). All book text should be
entered, then go back and format the particular direction details around that text.
• Recording the audio can commence. Two audio workstations will be available starting
  Tuesday, Feb 12th.

----------
February 8th
• Finished the white balance matrix using Photoshop. To be printed next week.
• Bring in a children's book for Monday.

----------
February 7th
• No buses today...Tsk, tsk, tsk. So walk, for crying out Pete's sake. I did(n't).
• Color temperature handout. Contains important info on light characteristics
• Each student recorded themselves (faces) in four white balance scenarios: 3200K WB shot
indoors, 3200K WB shot outdoors, 5600K WB shot indoors, 5600K WB shot outdoors. Example
  on the downloads page.

----------
February 6th
• School closed for snow day.
• Spend today looking for a good picture book for children under 6. It should have large pictures and
the text should not interfere with them.

----------
February 5th
• Viewed examples of student made children's stories and discussed strengths/weaknesses.
• Demonstration of white balancing a camera is daylight (5600K) versus incandescent (3200K)

----------
February 4th
• Distributed and discussed the course outline.
