----------
April 29th
• Why do I do it? Why? Every year I compliment a class on their work and every year it jinxes the
class. Today I mention how pleased I am with the work quality and the next thing I know, I've got
every other student breaking their delicate pieces, pulling apart their ill-fitting lids, blowing brads
through the box sides. When will I ever learn?
• Continued work on the photobox. Any slower and time will actually start going backwards.
• Couple of students are effectively complete. Just a quick light sanding to remove excess filler.
• Several people are very close to finishing

more of these quizzes soon...until everyone can get it right.
• Took up the Engineering Treasure hunt. Most did reasonably well. Still waiting for a confirmation
on the number of motors on Mr. Freeze. Will they respond? Unlikely. Curse Wikipedia!!!
• Began SAFETY TRAINING for the main shop. This is a LEGAL requirement of all students. Students
may not use any tool, especially a power tool, without sufficient safety training and by
demonstrating competent usage to the teacher.
• SAFETY TRAINING is required for every course involving tools, every year, regardless of whether
you have had it before. So if you have been trained in previous years, think of this as a refresher.
• Specifically covered today: General safety rules...safety glasses, clothing, ear protection, focus, etc.
• Discussed hardwood (deciduous) vs. softwood (coniferous).
• Introduced the concept of "dressing" rough lumber (FEWTEL).
• Rough lumber thickness is measured in 1/4" increments starting at 1". However, it is notated as
4/4...read "four quarter". Two inch thick rough l lumber would be 8/4 (read eight quarter) four
inch lumber would be 16/4 (read sixteen quarter). What would inch and a half be called? (6/4
  read six quarter).

----------
March 20th
• Quiz on hand tool names and functions (This is being posted at noon on Wednesday. If you
are reading this before Thursday then the quiz will not be a surprise. Congratulations.)
