Sept. 08 09
Welcome back! Just a reminder that a studio fee of $70.00 is payable to
Cawthra Park (Visual Arts Photography), by cheque upon start of the course.
Course expectations can be viewed by both parents and students on-line at
Mr.Ball's Teacher Web site in the Expectations section. No cameras are needed
for the first week, but if you have a 35mm film camera with a manual setting
to use, bring it the following week. Manuals for home cameras are very
helpful, as are fresh batteries. Loaner cameras will be available upon
return of parental/guardian signed permission to borrow sheets. Photography
notebooks are essential as diagrams etc. will be handed out. Student
portfolio books are provided as part of supplies paid in fee.

Sept. 15 09

Students are learning the parts of the camera in preparation for their unit 1
test. A "pop" test is quite possible. Some reading homework has been
assigned.

Sept. 17, 09
We had some fun shooting intentional mergers with the digital cameras. We
have begun looking at composition.
Students are learning the parts of the camera and the functions of these
parts. More reading and diagram labelling is being assigned Friday.
Fees are due for payment on Friday the 18th unless other arrangements have
been made. Another "pop" quiz is likely for next week, before the Unit 1
test (TBA).

Sept 23,09
We are learning about photograms and the darkroom. This is a brief "detour"
as we create items for fundraising for our Terry Fox event. We expect an
optional second attempt at the of the parts of the camera "pop" quiz on
Monday. We will return to theory on the Camera next week.

Oct. 02 09

Unit #1 TEST OCT 05 -- PARTS OF THE CAMERA AND HOW THEY WORK AND
FUNCTION/PURPOSE.

October 13 09
All students have now written the unit #1 test. Most students now have a
loaned camera and are shooting photos for the "Exploring the World around
You" project.

October 16 09
Students have finished shooting their film and are now learning how to load
film onto reels for processing. All cameras out on loan should now be
returned.

Oct 21 09
Just a heads up note.
There will be a unit 2 test in about two weeks or so on the processing of
film and paper, as we progress through our darkroom theory. We will also be
doing some pin hold photography.

Nov. 03 09
Students have begun pinhole photographs, and processed negatives. Text
questions/review of general darkroom procedure were done today. Students
should have complete notes and diagrams for the unit 2 test November 16 09.
We will begin enlarging negatives next! Pinhole ( small project worth 20
marks) due Nov. 20 09. Exploring the World project due shortly after this.

November 9 09
Students have a progress check due this Wednesday. They need to show one
contact sheet completed and to hand in for marking a test strip of 5- 5
second intervals. Ten marks are allotted for this. It must correctly
focused and have correct contrast, as well as having correct sequencing of
the image at the 4 X 6 inch size. It is due at the end of class on Wednesday
the 11th.

Nov.15, 09
The test on Unit #2 has been moved to the 23rd of November. Exploring the
World Project is due on the 25th of November. Pinhole project is still due
on the 20th of November.

Dec. 03 09
Students should now have submitted their first film project, "Exploring the
World". Portfolio process work is to accompany all print projects. We are
now starting the unit on lighting and portraiture, including both film and
digital work (concurrently). One piece from this unit is due before the
holidays on the 16th of Dec. Students will be working on two projects. The
other piece will be due at the end of thefirst week back in Jan.2010.

Dec 17 09
Students may be able to hand in a digital piece today, if they started out
with the digital option. Since, the darkroom was not open yesterday, I have
extended the due date for the first half of the Portraiture by one day -- to
the 5th of Jan. and am asking for one 8x10 traditional film print, which must
be labelled either candid(informal) or studio(formal). It is not to be spray
matted, but rather submitted in the portfolio with supporting negatives.

Jan.05 2010
Students now have the date of Jan.12 as the due date for term studio work.
This includes negatives for Portraiture which are accompanied by: negatives,
contact sheet, all paper work (self evaluation)and one labelled 8X10 inch
print of a portrait (formal or informal). Jan 13th is the date for an in-
class review for the written exam. Some vocabulary review work may be done
at home, as a vocab sheet was handed out.
The studio exam will be introduced on the 14th of Jan. Day one for this is
then on the 15th and is due on the 22nd of Jan., for a total of 5 working
days. Students must be present on these days in order to use the darkroom.
