The best "homework" you can do with children is to READ with them each day!
I understand that families may not have access to reading materials that are
available at the school. For this reason, I offer different programs
designed to give parents a variety of resources to use when reading.
One of the first stages of reading is learning the letters of the alphabet
and their corresponding sounds. The only work I suggest you complete with
your child is spending a few minutes in the evenings reviewing the new
letter/sound taught. In each of the Parent Communication Books, you will find
a set of card holders. I will place a card containing the new letter's
sound, action, and song in the communication book once it has been taught.
Aside from practising letters and sounds, the remainder of the work listed
below is OPTIONAL. Parents may contact me if they would like to participate
in any of the listed activities.
1. Letter/Sound Book(JK & SK)-as new letters/sounds are introduced as
part of the Jolly Phonics program, an insert containing the song and action
will be added in the communication book for practice.
2. Word Lists(JK & SK)-once sounds/letters are mastered, student moves onto
word lists that progress from phonetic “sounding out” to sight words. These
will also be placed in the communication book. Please initial the list when
you are done so I will know to add a new one.
3. "Snuggle-Up and Read" Packs(mainly for SK, JK if ready)-student receives
a pack of 2-3 leveled books that correspond to reading ability.
Snuggle Up & Read Packs MUST be returned on TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY to receive new
pack. Please keep them in the ziploc bag to avoid losing any packs.
4. Literacy Bags (JK)-student receives a themed bag of 1-4 books (containing
books children may be able to read & books that parents read aloud to them)
with a list of related activities to complete.
Literacy Bags MUST be returned every TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY to receive a new bag.
