Be A Word Master!
"The more you read,
the
more you'll know
The
more you know,
the
more places you'll go!"
Here are some fun ways to practice
those important "quick as a flash" words...
*Write word wall words on slips of paper.
Cut the letters apart. Practice "fixing-up" the mixed up letters! Can you mix
more than one word together and still unscramble?
*Put flour, sugar, or sand in a pan.
Practice writing your word wall words with your finger!
*Play Password: Take a few of those
tricky words and tape them to the entryway of rooms in your home. Each time
you enter the room, read the "password" aloud!
*Hide word wall words around the house.
Ask someone at home to help you find them. Read each word they are able to
find!
*Write sentences using your word wall
words. How many word wall words can you use in one sentence?
*Search a magazine or newspaper for word
wall words. How many can you find on one page? Or, choose a "Word Of The Day."
See how many times you can find that word.
*Write 10 word wall words on slips of
paper. Put them in a paper bag. Choose four words out of the bag. Use them in
two sentences and draw a picture to illustrate!
*If you have an extra beach ball at home,
ask mom or dad to help you write word wall words on it with a permanent
marker. Play catch with someone in your family. When you catch the ball, read
the word that your fingers touch.
*Ask members of your family to play "What
ís My Name?" with you! Tape a word wall word to each person. Call each person
by their "word wall word" instead of their name for a little while! Later,
after you have taken your name tags off, see if you can remember who is who
and match the words with the person.
*Read a book to a brother or sister, or
have them read a book to you. Say "ding ding ding!!" every time you spot a
word wall word!
*Play Slapjack! Write word wall words on
slips of paper and the word "Jack" on three slips. Shuffle them and divide
them face down in two piles. Find a family member to play with you. Flip over
the cards one at a time. If you can read the word, keep it! If you flip over
the Jack, slap it and say "Slapjack!" The first person to slap the card steals
the other person's pile. The person with the most cards at the end wins!
*Challenge mom, dad, or big brothers or
sisters to a Spelldown! Choose a word wall word and spell it aloud for them.
Their job is to tell you the word that you have spelled. YOUR job is to tell
them if they are right!
*Ball Spell your words! When the weather
cooperates, take a basketball outside with your word wall words. Spell your
word wall words aloud. Each time you say a letter, bounce the ball. Give an
extra big bounce for the last letter!
*Write, write, write your words! Use
chalk, markers, fancy pens, paint, ketchup or....anything you want! (As long
as you've cleared it with mom or dad FIRST! )
