Legacy Life - Update
WELCOME BACK We would like to express our thanks for your support during our first three years here at Legacy. This year will see a reduction in our student enrolment for the first time in four years. More than two hundred students have left Legacy to form the nucleus of David Suzuki Public School. As was done in each the last two years, we are working to comply with Ministry of Education Primary Class Size Reduction expectations. While we do not anticipate changes of the same magnitude that have happened in the past, there is still a possibility that there might be a need to move some students throughout the month of September. As always, teachers will consider various factors when making any student changes. CURRICULUM NIGHT We invite you to attend our curriculum night on Thursday, September 24th from 7:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. During this time you will have an opportunity to hear one of two different presentations from your child’s teachers. The first presentation will take place from 7:00—7:25 and the second presentation from 7:35—8:00. Please remember this is not a time to discuss your child’s progress, but is instead an opportunity for you to hear about curriculum expectations for the upcoming year. SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS Nomination forms will soon be sent home and are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18th. The election of Legacy School Council will take place during the first meeting of the year on Monday, September 21st, from 7:00—8:30 in the school library. STAFF CHANGE This year we welcome the following new members to our staff: Mrs. Margot Chinnery Grade 1/2 (LTO) Ms. Mary Kyriopoulos KDGN & Prep Coverage SCHOOL AGENDAS School agendas play an important role in keeping our students organized. Students will be provided with a school agenda during the first week of school. The cost of the agenda is $7.00. SCHOOL SAFETY The Board is working in close cooperation with York Region Community and Health Services with respect to H1N1. Board staff are in daily communication with health authorities in the region. We have been assured that they are very sensitive to our concerns regarding the operation of schools. The Board is ready and able to take whatever advice or action regional health authorities recommend. York Region Community and Health Services is not reporting individual confirmed cases. This is consistent with the World Health Organization. This is considered a virus that is in our communities. In an effort to keep our area schools active and safe, we are requesting all schools to remind their parents about the importance of school safety zones. The Town has implemented several projects to assist with the monitoring of the areas including the I WALK program, updated traffic regulations and signage, and frequent patrols by parking control officers to ensure these regulations are obeyed. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS Panoramic Studios will be at Legacy to take children’s photographs on Wednesday, September 23rd and Thursday, September 24th. SCHOOL WEBSITE The YRDSB is currently in the process of altering its’ board wide web site as well as individual school website. As a result we have limited updates posted on our own school website. We appreciate your patience as we wait for this improvement.
VOLUNTEER THANK YOU TEA We remind you that our Legacy P. S. Volunteer Breakfast will take place on Thursday, May 14th. This is our chance to celebrate the generosity of its volunteers and families who give their time, talent and hearts to our community. SEPTEMBER 2009 CLASS PLACEMENTS The process of class placements will begin later on in the Spring. Forming new classes is always a challenging task. We do ask for your input if you feel your child has particular needs that should be considered. Special needs, subject interests, important social issues, placement of twins, and personal traits of the child are appropriate references. However, we ask that you discuss concerns with your child’s current teacher and then write a note to the Principal before May 22nd. It is important for you to note that this year will present even greater change in the staffing and class assignments for the staff at Legacy P.S.. The opening of David Suzuki P.S. means that nearly 240 students will be leaving our school to join the new school. This also means that a number of staff will be moving to a number of different YRDSB schools. As a result, the possibility of students being placed in particular classes will be a much more difficult chore than in the past. Our new staffing list and assignments will not be available to our community until later in June. EQAO Students in grades 3 and 6 will be participating in the provincial EQAO testing beginning on Monday, May 25th. In order to reduce the number of interruptions during this testing, we ask that parents make every effort to schedule appointments for their children outside of this time period. LEGACY STUDENTS SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR CHARITY Legacy students raised more than $3500 for the Markham Stouffville Hospital through the Legacy Run which took place on Thursday, April 23rd. Our school has raised more than $12 000.00 for various charities during the past year. P.A. DAY—THURSDAY, JUNE 25th Just a reminder, like last year, YR elementary teachers will be receiving a half-day on Thursday, June 25th to focus on divisional and school needs in planning for continuous student improvement.
Please note that students will attend school during the morning ONLY on the 25th. Students will be dismissed early at 11:50 a.m.
Arrangements have been made for students who are normally bussed to and from school to receive transportation home. Parents whose children attend afterschool child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule. SPRING CLEANING Are you tired of shifting piles of books around your house? Are books making friends with the dust bunnies under your children’s beds? Are bookshelves buckling under the weight? It’s time to check for overdue library books and textbooks that are hiding in your home. SCHOOL BUSSING Inquiries about school bussing may be directed to the school office after Tuesday, September 1st.. You may also visit www.schoolbuscity.com for details prior to this date. LUNCH TIME ASSISTANTS Some of our lunch time supervisors may not be returning next year. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this position, please call the office and speak to Mrs. Burton.

They are your responsibility. ATTENDANCE POLICY Regular, punctual attendance is expected of all students as it ensures continuity of programs and promotes success in academic and social areas. Students are expected to be in class on time. A student is considered late when he/she arrives to school during or after announcements. Those who arrive late must report to the office to sign in and obtain an ‘admit slip’ to show the teacher. Students may be required to make up for lost time. A letter or phone call will advise parents of an excessive number of inexcusable lates or absences. HOLIDAY HAMPER SUPPORTA special thanks is extended to the many members of our community who were involved with the Holiday Hampers during the m onthof December. NOVEMBER ACTIVITIES In just a few days it will be the eleventh day of the eleventh month—REMEMBRANCE DAY. For millions of Canadians, including our students, parents and staff at Legacy, this will mean taking a few moments to stand with our heads bowed as we take part in a student led ceremony to honour the many Canadians who paid the supreme sacrifice in a variety of ways. It is always the right time to spend time reminding each other of how we must live out our daily lives in peace.

HOLIDAY HAMPERS It has become a Legacy tradition that each year we work together to help families in need over the holiday season. Our Legacy School Council plays a very important role in this project and will be providing information on how you can help during the early part of December.
October 2008 FALL ACTIVITIES The return to Fall activities is an especially busy time for many people, places and Legacy P.S. is no exception. We have already completed our Terry Fox Run (with almost $2000 raised). In addition, X-country, Girls’ and Boys’ Volleyball, as well as various activities and class trips are well under way. In the midst of this, we invite you to attend our Curriculum Night on Tuesday, October 7th from 7:00—8:15. During the evening, we encourage you to share information and ask questions. We remind you that specific questions and concerns that relate specifically to your child should be directed to teachers at another time. Our teachers are always more than willing to discuss the progress of their students. LEGACY SCHOOL FORUMS We are pleased to announce the first of three Legacy Forums to be held on Thursday, December 4th. The focus of this forum is Literacy. A letter announcing these special evenings will be sent home in the next few days. These forums are being sponsored by our new neighbours at HSBC. EXTENDED HOLIDAYS Sometimes parents plan extended holidays during the school year. Parents who choose to remove a student from school for extended holidays are responsible for providing the learning experiences the student has missed while away. Teachers are often asked to provide work for the time the student will be absent. This is very difficult to do because, of course, the child will need instruction prior to being able to do the work he/she will miss. At best, teachers can assemble some work they think the child can do independently. When the child returns to school, he/she will need to catch up on the missed concepts taught. This again, is the responsibility of the parents. Please remember that each week of absence, a child would miss approximately 30 hours of instructional time. HALLOWE’EN COSTUME GUIDELINES In accordance with our Safe School Policy, students and their parents are reminded that Hallowe’en costumes are NOT to include weapons of any kind (real or toy). We encourage students not to choose costumes that portray violent themes. We also remind all families to carefully read labels of the treats that children will inevitably bring to school out of consideration for our students with severe allergies. INCLEMENT WEATHER The weather is beginning to cool off and our Canadian winters guarantee that it will get colder. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed to go outdoors. Extra sweaters, jackets, etc. may be required. Please make sure all items are labeled clearly with your child’s name. Our LOST & FOUND gets filled up quickly and belongings often go unclaimed. All students are required to go outside for recess in the morning and at lunch recess. Children who are ill should remain at home until completely recovered. It is very difficult to accommodate requests for children to remain indoors because appropriate supervision is not available. SCHOOL COUNCIL A reminder that our next school council will take place on Monday, October 20th from 7:00 to 8:30 in our school library. All parents are welcome. QSP MAGAZINES When you order a magazine directly from the publisher, all the money leaves the community. When you order through this program, a substantial portion of the subscription “stays at home” to support various projects at Legacy. Thank you for your support. Our deadline for orders is Tuesday, October 14th.
SEPTEMBER 08 WELCOME BACK We would like to express our thanks for your support during our first two years here at Legacy. We continue to see increased enrolment, although all new students entering our holding area are now being sent to Little Rouge Public School. As was done last year, we are working to comply with Ministry of Education Primary Class Size Reduction expectations. While we do not anticipate changes of the same magnitude that have happened in the past, there is still a possibility that there might be a need to move some students throughout the month of September. As always, teachers will consider various factors when making any student changes. CURRICULUM NIGHT We invite you to attend our curriculum night on Tuesday, October 7th from 7:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS Nomination forms will soon be sent home and are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19th. Most students have now been provided with a school agenda. (Some are still on back order.) The cost of the agenda is $7.00. SCHOOL SAFETY WEEK A number of activities will take place during the week of September 22nd concerning children’s safety. We will also conduct a fire drill as well as a CODE RED drill during this week. Bus safety classes will be conducted with all children during the first week of November. These procedures are important in helping children feel safe during their time at school. We also ask that should you have a need to visit the school, that you would please report and sign in at the school office. Thanks as well for your cooperation with respect to our school parking issues. Please refer to the flyer in your school information package for details of our parking regulations. This has made for a much safer environment for our children. We ask that you follow all traffic rules when dropping off your children. In addition, we remind you that the YMCA parking lot should not be used for school drop offs. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS Panoramic Studios will be at Legacy to take children’s photographs on Tuesday, September 23rd and Wednesday, September 24th.
EARTH WEEK CELEBRATIONS Many thanks to all members of the Eco-Team for planning a wonderful Earth Week. Classes participated in student-led hikes as well as creating individual Earth Tree promises. The students also participated in a poster contest and were reminded throughout the week to “THINK GREEN.” KIDS LUNCH LADY UPDATE We have just recently begun Kids Lunch Lady on Mondays of each week. The response has been very good to this point and we will continue to offer it. Feedback is welcome. SEPTEMBER 2008 CLASS PLACEMENTS The process of class placements will begin shortly. ARE YOU MOVING? Parents are reminded to please send a written note to the office if you know your child will not be returning to Legacy Public School next school year and include the name of the new school, if you know it. Please, also remind neighbours or friends that if they have not registered already for September, to please do so immediately. EQAO Students in grades 3 and 6 will be participating in the provincial EQAO testing between May 26th and June 6th. In order to reduce the number of interruptions during this testing, we ask that parents make every effort to schedule appointments for their children outside of this time period. DRESS CODE With the arrival of the warm weather, this is a good time to review our dress code. Students are expected to arrive at school in clean, tidy and appropriate clothing. Mini shorts, bare midriff, or other revealing clothing and T-shirts with suggestive illustrations/slogans are not acceptable. Students will be required to change. This is according to our policies as outlined in the Student Agenda. Thank you for your co-operation. With the warmer weather, we do recommend that all students wear sunscreen and hats. VOLUNTEER THANK YOU TEA Legacy P. S. wants to celebrate the generosity of its volunteers and families who give their time, talent and hearts to our community. A breakfast tea will be held on Thursday, May 15th to thank all our wonderful dedicated Legacy volunteers. LEGACY P.S. SUPPORT APPRECIATED
Students from Legacy ran during the day on April 23rd. More than $1000.00 was raised to support the Markham Stouffville Hospital. In addition, our school community has also supported the Heart and Stroke Foundation as well as various other charities throughout the year.
