Jamnuary 8 Thursday
Assign: Began the last unit on measurement and geometry. Work on review of perimeter, area
volume Assign:Review skills plus work on volume and area of rectangular prisms only.
Tomorrow we will practice a quadratic relation problem for the investigation next week.
Students are reminded that they must have texts, workbooks and equipment with them
every day.
January 7 Wednesday
Assign: Completed in class today the transformations summary for the quadratic function.
Students will receive a practice package for the summative investigation on Friday.
We will begin the last unit of this course tomorrow. Students are reminded to check
Tweb each night for review sheets that are posted. These may be printed off
and put in a separate section of their math binder. Whenever they have free time
they should continue to work on these.
January 6 Tuesday
Assign: Students received a handout on quadratic regression. This should be filed with other tech
sheets that have been given throughout the semester( gold colour). We spent this class
continuing with the assignment in the new text. We still need to complete the last section
in this course on geometry. The test may be on Wednesday as the classes are shortened
for EQAO administration on Tuesday. The class will be advised.
NOTE: Now posted - sheet on quadratic regression - download and place in your binder for the
assessment next week. Also contiuue to look for review sheets posted in folder.
January 5 Monday
Assign: Students worked with graphing calculators today as they prepare for the investigation part of the final summative next week. For this assessment, they will access to notebooks and
texts. Calculators can not be taken home but students can see me on lunch
hours or after school to practise with them.We are working on questions
Pg.406 #6-10 in old text and Pg.324 #4-10 in the new text.
NOTICE: Students have been advised that the investigation in this course will be held on Friday January 9th or Tuesday January 13th. During the first week back it will be established which day will be preferable. Dec.18 Friday Assign; Students worked with graphing calculators today examining transformations of y=x^2 Dec.17 Wednesday assign; Students wrote a quiz, we introduced the problem that we will continue with today. Dec.16th Assign; Review for quiz tomorrow covering factoring, expanding and solving equations by factoring. Nov. 21 Friday Assign: Text assignment Using the graphing calculator. this was a class assignment as students are not allowed to take TI83's home. PG. 336-337 #1-7 Nov.20 Thursday Assign: Work on the graphing calculator- looking for a pattern in the equation y = ( x-p) ^2 +q Nov.19 Wednesday Assign: Class work today involved using the TI-83's to fit data to an equation using patterns already established. No assigned work as calculators cannot be taken home. Nov.18 Tuesday Assign: Examined the table of values , the equation, the step pattern using equations. For tonight, complete table of values, graph, step pattern, as well as first and second differences for the two relations y= 4x^2 and y= -4x^2 Nov.17 Monday Assign: Investigation: Examining the relationship between length of side in a rectangle of fixed perimeter and the area of the rectangle.Trign tests returned. Solutions will be posted tomorrow as absent students have now written. Students are expected to get tests signed. The signed tests along with complete solutions written on separate note paper are required by end of week. Investigation posted in handout folder. Nov.14 Friday Assign; Students completed board work using the equations to look for patterns on the graphs. There was no text assignment today. We will continue with this assignment on Monday. Nov. 13 Thursday Assign: Test today. NOv.12 Wednesday Assign: Worked through review for today's test. Completed graphs for 3 Table of values for parabola. Nov.11 Tuesday Assign: Examining the step pattern in parabolas. Assign; #1-6 Nov. 10 Monday Assign: Finished Investigation #1 where we construct a parabola using only pencil and ruler. Investigation # 2 Pg. 304 gives a parabola from a table of values. We will explore some of the terminology with respect to this curve before moving to the algebraic development. NOTE: Test is moved to Thursday because of the lockdown drill scheduled Wednesday. Nov.7 Friday Assign: First half of class continued to take up difficulties in review exercise. Investigation #1 on page 303 - Introduction to the parabola. If you did not complete this in class, have it finished by Monday. Bring rulers!!! These are mandatory. We have lots of graphing to do in this section. Nov. 6 Thursday Assign: Reviewed again the rules for using the trig functions . Students are to attempt the remaining questions in the review exercise for trig. the test on this unit will be next week. Have calculators and know how they work. Nov.5 Wednesday Assign: Quiz today. Students are working on the review exercise pg. 285-286 The test on chapter 5 will be next week, possibly Wednesday. Nov.4 Tuesday Assign: Pg. 274 #7-10,12-14 Pg. 281 #1-6 Students had almost one hour to work on this in class and get help. Two of these questions will be collected tomorrow and marked. In addition, there is a quiz tomorrow covering the three trig ratios sin, cos, tan . Students require a scientific calculator for this quiz. Calculators can not be shared. Oct.31 Friday Assign: Pg. 269 #7,9-11,13-15 Draw the triangle and make sure that the sides are labelled using A,O, or H Quiz - Next Wednesday -Nov 5th Oct.30 Thursday Assign: Pg. 268 #1-6 ( For questions #4-8 , sketch a triangle and label the sides as opposite, adjacent or hypotenuse. NOTE Two questions from the work will be selected for marking. These will be collected at the beginning of class. Oct. 29 Wednesday Assign: pG. 255-256 #9, 11-13 and Pg. 259 #1-5. There will be a homework check tomorrow. I will select five of the questions that were assigned. Oct.22 Wednesday Assign; Pg. 236 #6-10 applications of similar triangles Reminder Test on Friday on chapter 4 Proportional reasoning. This will include knowing how to work with scale- diagram, map, bar scale. Oct.21Tuesday Assign: Started similar triangles work today. Students must have calculators and rulers with them. These resources are not available at the school. Pg.235 #2,3,5 Set up each question as done in class. Oct.20 Monday Assign: Review skills with Pythagorean Theorem and angle relationships Pg. 220-221 #1-7 Test Friday - Ratios, scales , proportional reasoning Oct.17 Friday Assign: Continue work with ratio and proportion as it relates to scale drawings, and maps. Rulers and calculators are mandatory equipment. Oct. 16 Thursday Assign: Test today- No work assigned but we will be working with proportions and scale drawings. Students require a ruler and calculator for this material. A scientific calculator will be required for the work coming up in trigonometry. Oct.15 Wednesday Assign: Working with proportions and scale diagrams, maps, models. For tomorrow, complete the investigations on pages 192-194 Most students who were present completed this in class. REMINDER TEST TOMORROW ON LINEAR SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS. Oct.14 Tuesday Assign: Proportional reasoning with nutrition information Pg. 191 #5,6 Do question #5 by determining the percent of fat calories as we did in class. Multiplication by 30 answers the question but doesn't establish the percents. Oct.10 Friday Assign Work today on proportional reasoning NOTE: Test will be moved to Thursday as a number of students are participating in the " job shadowing" as part of their course in careers. Oct.9 Thursday Assign: Quiz returned today and full solutions provided on board.Students worked in the review exercise as there were many students out on field trip. Test will be Wednesday next week so students have a day to review after the weekend. Oct.8 Wednesday Assign: Word problems applications of linear systems. Oct.7 Tuesday Assign: Quiz Solving linear system( 4 questions) Began work on modelling with linear systems . Students are to finish the example started in class. Students may ask to use the graphing calculators at lunch under my supervision if they wish to get extra practice. Sept.26 Friday Assign: Students worked with graphing calculators solving linear systems. Sept.25 Thursday Assign: Students worked today using the graphing calculators and solved linear systems with algebraic modelling. No assignment tonight. We will continue this tomorrow. Sept.24 Wednesday Assign: Quiz - two linear equations to solve Finished class with solving linear systems on the TI-83 calculators. Tomorrow, we will examine solving the system using CAS. Homework from Tuesday will be collected tomorrow. This work is to be completed neatly on graph paper and the point of intersection neatly labelled. Sept.23 Tuesday Assign: Took up linear system from yesterday. Assigned 4 additional questions today. Check handout folder for today's assignment Examined solving these systems with technology Review for quiz on equations tomorrow Sept.22 Monday Assign: Students received back quiz written last week. Began work on linear systems. We worked through one problem . Students are to complete one more question. Graph y=x and x+ y=4 . Students should graph neatly. Make sure that you have graph paper with you tomorrow. Sept.19 Friday Assign: Students who did not return signed tests today need to bring them signed on Monday. We continued to work on both standard and slope y - intercept form today. Workbook Pg. 63- 64 #2,4-6 Sept.18 Thursday Assign: Quiz today on solving equations, lesson on rearranging the equation of the line from standard form to slope y- intercept form. Sept15 Monday Assign: Students received tests back today, but they were returned to me until tomorrow. Solutions will be posted in the classroom. Sept 11 Thursday Assign; Continued practice on finding equation of line with slope and point. Began work on solving equations Workbook Pg.52 #3 and Pg.54 #1,2,4 Sept.10 Wednesday Assign; This was a work period in preparation for the test on Friday. We are examining various ways of describing the straight line and writing its equation - table of values graph, algebraic representation. Test will cover questions like those in the workbook on pages 35-51 . A number of these were taken up and discussed on overhead. Sept.9 Tuesday Assign: Review and tie together the various representations of a linear function. There will be a quiz on Friday. Summary will be in class tomorrow. Workbook Pgs. 44-46 Sept. 8 Monday Assign: Students worked with graphing calculators again today. Handout Complete pages #39-43 in the workbook. Sept.5 Friday Assign: Students worked with the graphing calculators today to establish patterns for slope. Sept.4 Thursday Assign: Students were given a workbook today and we are completing pages 34-37. These questions continue to review ideas about the line and the linear relation. All students should now have scientific calculators and a binder for notes. Sept. 3 Wednesday Assign: Students received a copy of notes and examples. They have an assignment to based on this handout. In addition, any students who finished could work on the extra sheets provided. Sept 2 Tuesday Assign: Students were given an information sheet to complete. As well, they received a short question sheet to review a few ideas from last year. For tomorrow , students should have a binder, some paper, a pencil, and a calculator. Graph paper will also be required. I hope everyone is enjoying these last days of summer. For the first day, would you please bring to class:
