January 8 Thursday
Assign: Work today with the graphing calculators- Using the TVM solver plus
functions that calculate: sum of interest , sum of principal, balance after a
number of payments. This can be used as a check for the spreadsheet work.
January 7 Wednesday
Assign: Students completed three amortization tables. Everyone is encouraged
to be present from now till the end. You will have access to notes, but you
have to be able to complete the spreadsheet applications without help.
That is an expectation of the course and the skill must be practised to
improve.
January 6 In class work period on spread sheet for an amortization table.
NOTE: IF A STUDENT MISSES A PORTION OF THE FINAL SUMMATIVE
A CREDIT WILL NOT BE GRANTED. ( This summative is spread over
4 days- Jan.13th -Jan16th inclusive)
January 5 Monday
Assign: Students worked today at creating a spreadsheet to examine the impact of interest on a loan. We will consider altering the term of the loan and
the interest rate charged on the loan. This type of question will be
on the final summative next week.
Dec.19 Friday Assign. NO class today. eVeryone enjoy the holidays. Dec.18 Thursday Assign: Worked through examples of annual costs , monthly costs and cost per kilometer of car ownership. Dec.17 Wednesday Assign: Worked through examples of buying a car using a loan versus leasing. Dec.16 Tuesday Assign; Work today on calculating depreciation of car's value. assign #1-4,6 calculating cost of purchase of car. Continue to work at spreadsheet skills. Dec.15 Monday Assign: Class work today. Examined the payment schedule for financing car payments with zero percent financing vs loan bearing interest. Students need to practise to improve spreadsheet skills. NOTE: Students have been advised that the final summmative for this course will be held January 13th-January 16th. Students will have access to notes and texts for this assessment. Dec.12 Friday Assign: Presentations concluded today. We will spend some time investigating aspects of car ownership: used vs new insurance ( on parent's policy vs own) We will be using spread- sheets again as we work to examine the time to pay off a car loan. Dec.11 Thursday Assign: Continue with presentations . Students worked again on spreadsheet applications to determine length of time to accumulate funds for the trip they designed. Dec.10 Wednesday Assign: Trip presentation today in class. These should be finished by tomorrow. We are beginning the unit on Credit cards. Students can access the site www.practicalmoneyskills.ca and choose "students" to get informed about this topic. Dec.9 Tuesday Assign: Two presentations are left to complete this topic REMINDER: Class tomorrow is in room 102 near music rooms Dec.8 Monday Assign; Presentations will conclude tomorrow. A final aspect of this assignment will be to complete a spreadsheet detailing the savings component required to save for the trip you investigated Dec.5 Friday Assign: Presentations will continue on Monday, make sure that you follow the guidelines for the project. There must be a printed sheet of information accompany the display and oral presentation. Examples of formulas in spread sheets was done again in class. There will be one more assessment given in this topic- one dealing with a single deposit , the other with regular deposits. If you were absent, get the examples from someone and copy them into your notebook. Dec.4 Thursday Assign: Work period for presentation prep- Trip projects will be presented in class tomorrow. Write-ups are due tomorrow .Presentations will be about 5 minutes in length. Dec 3 Wednesday Assign: Students had a work period to finish collecting material for trip project for this unit. Materials should be on hand for completing display tomorrow. Presentations will be in class on Friday. Dec.2 Tuesday Assign: Worked on spreadsheet skills entering formula with regular deposit. Remainder of class spent on trip project. Check handout folder for details of project. Dec.1 Monday Assign: Worked again on inserting a formula into a spreadsheet for compound interest- Students have put oa copy of this in notebook and they can practise doing this in Excel. The formula is the same. Nov.28th Friday Assign: Test today Savings and investing Nov. 27th Thursday Assign: Work on trip project - This will continue into next week. STudents will be required to assemble the trip information on tri- fold display board and present to class. Final project includes costs for all aspects of the trip. Include pictures of accommodation, local sites, etc Nov 26th Wednesday Assign: Work on trip project - initial details - city/departure date/ estimate due Friday Nov 25 Tuesday Assign; Began a new unit today. This is a project based unit. Students can individually or in pairs plan a trip. The minimum length of stay in the city must be one week. Trips may be longer. Guidelines for the project are posted in the handout folder. Depending on destinations, not all items will apply. Nov.24 Monday Assign: Work again today on the graphing calculators with the TVM solver this time with regular payment. Students need to know what the variable means in the solver. They will be allowed to use their notes on a test of this material. Students worked on spreadsheet skills using fill handle and entering a formula into a cell. Rule of 72 discussed and verified using real data. It is a goal of the course that students gain some proficiency in the use of formulas in spreadsheets. we examined the impact of starting to invest early and observed the difference in what amount accumulates at age 65. Read part of chapter 2 of "the wealthy barber" Examined compound interest formula. This will be examined again tomorrow for those who were away. One page formula/information sheet needs to be prepared for tomorrow for the summative next week. Nov.5 Wednesday Assign: Examined compound interest. Read ch. 1 of " The Wealthy Barber" This will be an ongoing project throughout the term as we are now in the savings / ivestment part of the course. Sept.24 Wednesday Assign: Pg.48,49 #1-9 This chapter begins the examination of deductions in pay T4,T5 and T1 general form for filing income tax. Students will be expected to
be able to complete simple entries in a T1 general as part of being familiar
with the document and reading entries from various slips.

A number of students did not have calculators with them today. This is a requirement for this course.
They will be used on an almost daily basis. A few students have texts owing from last year. These accounts
need to be settled prior to receiving a text for this course.
Sept. 2 Tuesday
Assign: Students completed an information sheet and received handouts-
one containing a copy of some classified ads and some information on
the minimum wage requirements. For tomorrow, please bring a binder( 2 " ) ,
a pencil and a calculator. If you have books to return from courses last year,
please do so as this needs to be completed prior to receiving a text.
