*SOLUTIONS TO REMAINING TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS:
pg.255
2. Not all of the capillary beds are open at one time because all of them
would hold more (1.4 times) than the total blood volume of the all the blood
in the body. Vasodilation and vasoconstriction refer to the dilation and
constriction of blood vessels, which ultimately controls how much blood flows
into the capillaries.
3. Advantages: single-cell layers capillaries ensure that each body cell
receives a supply of red blood cells
Disadvantage: small capillaries are easily broken (causes bruising & leaking
blood).
4. Harvey's experiments with blood flow proved the existence of valves in
veins.
5. Aneurysms are fluid-filled bulges in arteries, and can cause the artery
wall to bust (therefore, less oxygen can be transported to the body tissues).
6. Fat deposits in arteries are dangerous because they decrease the diameter
of the artery and thus impair blood flow and increasing blood pressure
(putting more strain on the heart).
7. Blood gets back to the heart through veins because skeletal muscles
around veins contract, and help move blood through valves and toward the
heart.
8. Varicose veins are caused by leaky valves that allow blood to leak down
with gravity in the opposite direction to the heart. The blood then pools in
the veins and causes bulges. Varicose veins can be prevented by stretching,
ensuring good circulation, wearing support hose/socks, and avoiding standing
for long periods of time.
9. (a)Atherosclerosis occurs due to poor diet or genetic predisposition whne
fat droplets accumulate and close off the opening of arteries.
9. (b) A buildup of plaque decreases the diameter of the artery and thus
impair blood flow and increasing blood pressure (putting more strain on the
heart).
9. (c) Treatment can include lifestyle changes (better diet + exercise),
medication, or surgery wherein tubes are inserted to enlarge the opening of
the artery.
pg. 258
1. Systemic circulation is blood traveling from the heart to the tissues of
the body, while pulmonary circulation is blood travelling to the lungs.
2. The AV valves separate the atria from the ventricles and keep blood
moving in the right direction, and semi-lunar valves separate ventricles from
arteries.
3. Angina is chest pain that results from blockages in the coronary arteries
(the vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the heart itself).
4. Coronart bypass operations are performed to treat angina by re-routing
blood flow around the blockage through grafted arteries.
