November newslettre

            Bonjour!

Trick or treat!!!...no that’s over.

Oh! Oh! Oh!...no not yet. November is one of those in between months. To avoid thinking about it too much, 8b will be active in learning with lots of good projects and activities.

In French, we will use extreme sports to work on a more informative type of reading and writing. Next, we will start a unit on biographies which will integrate the History and French curriculum. And in December we will be looking at legends to prepare for our St-Donat trip as well as covering some Drama expectations. Our regular dictées and grammar will support the ongoing skills development in French.

Reading in French is the key to developing good all-around skills. This is why I suggest a 15-20 min of reading every day for homework. I would appreciate your help in monitoring this activity at home and thank you for your support.

We started our History unit by building a time line for the classroom starting at 1840 all the way to the First World War. As mentioned earlier, the end project will be the presentation of a biography on one of the Fathers of the Confederation.  We are planning a trip to Bellevue House this month, if a parent volunteer would like to offer some help, please let me know.

In November the grade 8s are finishing a Data Management unit in Math. They will be learning more about scatter plots and histograms, developing their skill at interpreting the data from graphs.  Following that, the students will get into the Measurement strand of Math. More specifically, they will be discovering about circles and their properties. We will pursue this math strand in December while investigating measurement tools and surface area of cylinders.

In Physical Education, students will be focusing on physical fitness and training. They will have to present a cooperative game as a warm-up to the lesson. Later on in the month we will be starting basketball.

This term our focus in Health will be Healthy Eating.  We have started this unit and here are the topics that will be covered:

- analyse the effects of undereating and overeating on health and well-being,

- identify ways to maintain a healthy body weight,

- adopt personal food plans, based on nutritional needs and personal goals, to improve or maintain their eating practices.

In English, we will be starting to learn about memoirs and journal/diary writing with an emphasis on Non-Fiction reading and writing in November. We will then move to biography writing with the 2010 Olympics as our theme.

Upon completing our Cells unit in Science, we will then begin our Fluids unit until winter break.

In Visual Arts this term, the students have created a sculpture to reflect the symbolism of a song that they chose.  There are six elements of design and this term we will focus on line and colour. We will use media technology to create art, and study how different artists use lines and colours to create certain effects.  We will also interpret the feelings, issues and social message conveyed in works of art.
