How much homework in grade six can I expect?

I am not a believer in assigned homework. After teaching a lesson, if a
student does not finish the assigned work in class, the student is expected
to complete unfinished work at home to the best of their ability and return
it to school the following day.
Study habits are of utmost importance. Students should have an assigned time
at home (ex. after dinner)that they work on homework, assignments, projects,
reviewing daily work or studying for an upcoming test(s). In grade 6 it is
expected that this is accomplished on daily basis for at least a half hour.
I do not believe that a student in my class should be working on school work
at home for more than 1 hour. That is, unless they have waited to the last
minute tocomplete something and therefore that would be their own doing.

What supplies does my son/daughter need to help him/her in the classroom?

If possible, I would ask that each student bring the following items to
school: -three holed lined paper (200 sheets)
-three duotangs (for social studies, science and music)
          -coloured pencils
-a basic calculator (=,-,x,div.,%)that is easy to use.
          -glue stick
-running shoes and clothes for physical education
          -30cm ruler and a protractor
          -scissors
          -2 boxes of tissue
          -an agenda with a calender

Handing in money for various events, school trips, etc...

It is difficult at times to keep tabs of all the various amounts of monies collected as a classroom
teacher. Therefore I ask students for the exact amount that is asked for. Also please put it in an
envelope or a zip-lock sandwich bag with their name on the envelope or inside the sandwich bag.
Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

How much advance notice will students receive before being tested in various areas of the curriculum?

I do not assign test dates a month in advance. As we progress through each unit, I will try to
assess how the students are progressing. At the point I feel that adequate preparation has been
given, I will give the students 5 to 7 days notice before the test. This will also be posted on this
website.
In Social Studies and Science, students are expected to review notes and study during this period.
Tests in these 2 areas can be lengthy compared to previous grades' tests. The hope is to start
showing them how to study for large tests, thus preparing them for the intermediate grades.
