It is hard to believe that December is already upon us! We have been working
hard for this past term and now that report cards are going home, it is
satisfying to see how much everyone has grown as students and classmates! I
would like to extend a very warm welcome to Gabriel - a new classmate! I hope
you enjoy your new school and classmates!
This month we will be busy right up to the last day! Here is what we have
planned for this month:
MATH - We have started Unit 2 on Addition and Subtraction. This is a critical
unit as students must have a strong grasp of addition and subtraction in
order to comprehend multiplication and division. Please help your child by
quizzing them on addition and subtraction facts, especially the doubles!
There will be a test before the holidays to check for their understanding of
concepts taught.
LITERACY - We have been very fortunate to have received a new literacy
program called Nelson Literacy 3 which we have been using to explore how
questioning is a useful strategy to use to further our understanding of a
text and how it allows us to bring our own connections to the text as well.
This program also ties into our Science and Social Studies units which will
support the students learning. We have also been looking at how to improve
our retelling of a story by using a graphic organizer called a GO Chart. It
has proven to be highly effective and will be a valuable tool for your child
to use when reading and writing. Ask your child to show you what the GO chart
looks like and how to use it. In writing, as a final assignment to show their
learning of how to plan a story, come up with ideas and details and then
write an organized piece with an interesting topic sentence and good
conclusion, the students are working on an in-class assignment where they had
to choose to write about a memorable or favourite holiday, vacation, birthday
or relative to visit. They have deadlines to meet and the final piece should
be completed by Mon Dec 15th!
RELIGION - We are beginning our Advent unit where we will look at the Bible
and listen to the story of Jesus' birth from the perspective of the different
Apostles.
PHYS. ED - We have worked on our throwing and catching skills and now the
class has learned how to play tchoukball, which relies solely on their
ability to throw and catch with accuracy, as well as play as a team! It is a
very fun and energetic sport that uses trampoline mats as the goals and teams
may score on either of the 2 nets! We will continue with this until January.
ART - We are currently working on an art assignment that shows their
understanding of warm and cool colours. We will also be doing a few Christmas
crafts before the break!
As we get closer to Christmas holidays, please ensure that your child is
completing all work sent home - maintaining routine is necessary to keeping
everyone focused in the classroom! Thank you for your continued support of
your child and I look forward to meeting with each of you for parent
conferences. Have a Blessed Christmas!
