Homework --
One way that students may practice French at home is to "teach" another member
of the family the new and/or reviewed vocabulary of the day. Most words have
an action that goes with it to help in comprehension and each word is put into
various contexts or examples of use. Perhaps your child could come up with
new examples of the word in sentences.
To date, I am proud to say that the grade 7/8 students have been taught
between 800 to 900 words that they can use in different situations as needed
in daily conversations. The grade 3/4 class, after only 1 month of French
learning, have a vocabulary of more than 150 words! I am thrilled with their
progress.
Listed below are 9 Reading Strategies that you already use when reading
English books. They work just as well in reading French.
Reading Strategies
1 Think about what word or phrase would make sense in the story or sentence.
2 Find the key words (subject and verb).
3 Sound the word out.
4 Think of a word that looks and sounds similar (in French or English).
5 Look for parts of the word that are familiar.
6 Think about what word/expression would sound right in the sentence.
7 Check the pictures and the punctuation marks for clues.
8 Go back and read again.
9 Ask for help with the word/check a dictionary.
