December:
The special helper and mystery bag calender will be coming home this week. The letter for the first full week of December is Dd.
We want to thank you for coming in last month for the observations. It was terrific to have the opportunity to talk with you all and have you be a part of our classrooms. We have the pleasure of watching your child grow, learn and blossom each day so we hope you enjoyed seeing them in their school environment.
In Math, we will continue to look at non-standardized measurement. The students will have the chance to measure a variety of objects using different manipulatives such as unifex cubes, links, mini cubes and straws. We will be looking at why we require less of some measuring tools vs others. As patterning and number sense is intergrated into our calender, we will continue to develop those skills too.
We are going to be continuing our focus on retelling by breaking up the stories into beginning, middle and end. We have already done this by using a series of three pictures and the children were successful in doing this. We will scaffold the children's learning by moving onto sequencing a story that has limited text and then will challenge them by looking at a more complex story. Along with retelling, we will continue to work on building words and learning to decode texts. Please ensure that your child brings back their leveled reading books Tuesdays and Fridays (provided they are done), so that we can send home new books. Our goal is to read the books with your child prior to sending them home. There are times when we may want to spend more time on a specific text therefore we will wait to send it home.
The last day of school is December 18th. So we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best over the holiday season and a very healthy and happy New Year.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. The number is (905)889-1566. If you leave us a message, we will get back to you within 24 hours, unless we are away at conferences or illness.
Many thanks,
Tarant Lyttle and Dena Shillinger
