OUAC Application Recipe OUACApplicRecipe2009.pdf Succeeding In University Glossary Academic Year- The time during which classes are taught; in most Canadian universities the academic year runs from September to the beginning of May. The calendar year is usually divided into 2 or 3 academic sessions. Academic Standing- Status accorded upon completion of course work each year. You will either be in good standing, in which case you may continue; on probation, in which case a certain minimum performance will be expected; or have failed. Advanced Standing- Credit given for work completed elsewhere Aegrotat Standing- Credit for course based on term work, owing to illness at examination time. Auditing- Sitting in on a course without receiving credit for it. Bachelor’s Degree- The first degree sought by a university student. Ballot- In the case of a limited-enrolment course, the process of applying for entry to it. Calendar- Official publication of the university, listing sessional dates, admission requirements, program requirements, rules and regulations, and course descriptions. CEGEP- Quebec junior colleges. Challenge for Credit- Receiving credit for courses not taken, upon successful completion of an exam and payment of a fee. College- a division of the university; may be a residence or an academic entity in its own right with the power to grant degrees Co-operative Program- a work/study arrangement in which a student may earn a degree and gain practical work experience as well. Course Evaluation- rating of courses by either the students or the institution, taking into account both the professor and the course content. Course Load- the number of courses taken in an academic year Credit Courses- all academic courses carry a credit value, a certain number of credits is needed to graduate. Credit Hour- The credit value of the course, usually worth 3 or 6 credits DAT- Dental Aptitude test; admission test for entry to dental school DEC- Diploma of college studies; CEGEP matriculation certificate Deferment- Mark is deferred until all course work is completed; usually allowed in cases of illness or extenuating circumstance Drop-Date- Last date to withdraw from courses without incurring academic penalty Enrolment- The process of signing-up for courses Exclusion- A course that a student may not take because he or she is taking or has taken one that is substantially the same Expulsion- The most severe of academic
