In universities or colleges, a certificate may be awarded for completion of noncredit program of study or an advanced training program in professional development. Post-Diploma Program (generally one academic year, 2 semesters) Offered by colleges for graduates of a college or university program in related fields. Students receive an advanced certificate or diploma. Programs are generally one year in length and designed to provide very specialized and in-depth experience which will compliment a student’s current education or experience. These diplomas often provide enhanced employment opportunities. Accelerated Program (generally one academic year, 2 semesters) Accelerated programs allow university or college graduates with a degree or diploma to “fast-track” through a college diploma in a related field. Usually theses programs are completed in one year when students earn a college diploma (They now have a second diploma or a degree plus a diploma) Apprenticeship (3 to 5 years, work experience, 3200-9000 hours and in class training) Apprenticeship is a hand on training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade and who enjoy learning by doing. Employers provide about 90 percent of apprenticeship training in the workplace. The remainder involves classroom instruction in theory, which is usually given at a local community college, or provided through another approved training organization. Collaborative Programs (4 to 5 years) A collaborative program is an academic or vocational program developed cooperatively by university and college partners. These programs allow students to earn one or two credentials by attending both a college and a university. Concurrent Programs (Generally 4 years resulting in a university degree) Concurrent programs are related programs by offered by partnering college/university. One program leads to a diploma; the other leads to a degree. Students study in both programs simultaneously. Consecutive Programs or Transfer Agreements (4 or 5 years, dependant on diploma/degree combination chosen) Consecutive programs are related programs offered by partnering college/university. Credits or learning achieved in one program are transfer or applied toward another program after the first program is complete. Students earn 2 separate credentials. (Diploma and degree) Joint/ Integrated Programs (4 years resulting in a university degree) A joint/integrated program is one that joins 2 or more distinct, “free-standing” programs (in 2 or more colleges/universities) into one program. The program is planned, maintained and delivered by one or more college/university. Students earn one credential – normally a degree. Joint/integrated programs may offer courses at 2 or more institutions during one term or they may offer courses first at one institution during one term, then at the other institution in a subsequent term. **NEW First Generation Programs If you are attending a post-secondary institution in the fall and are the first generation in your immediate family to attend post-secondary studies, see Guidance for details about a special program for you!!
