Objective of this website

To develop exemplary teacher resources for mathematics using rich Canadian 
data sources from the 350 surveys conducted by Statistics Canada.

To support learning and teaching through workshops, on-line help, and the 
provision of exemplary teacher support materials through the learning 
resources module on www.statcan.gc.ca

About the teacher developers and reviewers of this site

Now retired, Joel Yan worked as a mathematician, researcher, and geographer 
at Statistics Canada for over 35 years.  Since 1992, his focus was 
development of teacher materials and support of teachers, professors and 
students in using StatCan resources.  He is passionate about helping to 
improve teaching and learning through developing resources and supporting 
teachers in the use of authentic Canadian data and other resources from 
Statistics Canada.  Joel has a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics and Chemistry 
from University of Toronto and an M.Sc. in Computer science from UBC 
(developing a geographic information system). Joel retired from Statistics 
Canada on January 21st, 2009.

Yves Saint-Pierre was Statistics Canada's Education representative in the 
province of Quebec from 2002 to 2008 and took over Joel's position at 
Statistics Canada in January 2009.  Before being involved in the world of 
education, Yves worked as an economist at StatCan from 1990 on.  His 
passion: finding unseen relationships between data series.

Mylène Abi-Zeid is a mathematics teacher in the Ottawa-Carleton District 
School Board, with 13 years experience.  Since the implementation of the new 
curriculum in 1999, she has taught the MDM4U, grade 9, and grade 10 courses. 
She loves to use technology tools and the latest data in her teaching 
and has given workshops on use of Fathom, StatCan data, Census at School, 
and teaching with technology.  Mylène is a full partner in creating and 
maintaining this website for the benefit of math teachers.

Jennifer Hall worked with Joel Yan as a Mathematics Microdata 
Learning Resources Officer, updating this site on a regular basis until 
August 2008.  She graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2005 
with an Honours B.Sc. with a double major in Applied Mathematics and 
Physiology.  She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Ottawa in 
2006 with her B.Ed. degree and in 2008 with her M. A.(Ed.) degree.  She is 
currently attending the University of Ottawa for her Ph.D. with Dr. 
Christine Suurtamm.

Angela McCanny is a mathematics teacher who is currently working as a 
Teacher Champion for Statistics Canada. In this capacity Angela offers 
classroom workshops on the 2006 Census and Census at School in the Ottawa 
area. To arrange for workshops in your school please contact Angela at

Betty Temmer has taught mathematics in Ontario schools for over 30 years. 
Although recently retired from the classroom, she continues with her passion 
for mathematics education by doing teacher in-service workshops on using the 
CCHS Microdata files in the investigation component of MDM4U. To arrange for
