This year is coming to a close much too quickly- not ready to give up my little sixth graders just yet! But, I think they are ready. We've wrapped up the Puberty Unit! Whew! Your kids did so well- I appreciate their sincerity, conscientiousness, and innocence! I'd also like to thank you for your kind words of confidence throughout the ordeal:) The ballet was wonderful, if you haven't heard. The kids really enjoyed it, especially the less formal, more modern interpretations we saw. It's important to witness the arts every once in awhile. Speaking of Art, our fabulous Rene Magritte homages are hanging in the hall. The kids did a fantastic job. It is evident they truly understand surrealism now. That artist is so enjoyable to learn about- and completely underrated (and plagiarized!). Their book report projects, also stunning, are on the outside wall too! Math is cooking along. We will test out of our latest unit, involving fraction and decimal understanding, in the next few days. You've probably noticed my emphasis on decimal rounding and computation these last few weeks (check the backpack). After the test on Tuesday, we will move onto the last unit involving pre-algebra (Finally... slope intercept and linear equations!!!! Can't wait). Kids have been exploring these concepts on Khan Academy (great online computation portal- click on practice!!!) over the last few weeks! And speaking of tests (okay-lame transition sentences I know - it's our focus this week in writing), we will undergo our final round of OAKS testing over the next week and a half. I am encouraging students who did not meet benchmark on the tests, to re-take it one last time. It is optional for students who have already exceeded. If you would not like your child to retest, please let me know (A note from our administration came home awhile back). ***Note from Mr. Lurie: In you next classroom newsletters please remind families of two things. First please remind everyone to use safety and common sense when crossing busy streets around Alameda. There are cross walks to to any place people want to go. Second, please remind families that unless it is raining they need to wait outside for the 8:35 bell. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Here is a list of our important dates for the next month!!! PS> Look for a note regarding a picnic with incoming Rigler (to Beaumont) sixth graders in your child's backpack tonight! Sincerely, Brian Important Dates to Consider!!!!! May 4th- Star Wars Day May 4th- Book Report Projects Due, Spelling Due, King Midas Comp.
