Teacher web will have an updated homework log and announcements. Please check your students planner for a running log of work turned in and work not received. My grade level colleagues and I will soon be formulating class lists for next year. If you would like to bring something to my attention to assist me in placing your child, please put it in writing without naming a teacher, requesting a student not be placed with a certain teacher, specifying gender or describing his/her physical characteristics. I must have your input in writing by May 10th. The class assignment process is a long and involved one. My colleagues and I spend a great deal of time looking at each of our own students to determine what type of classroom environment is going to best suit his/her needs. We also realize there are occasions when we feel some students should not be placed in the same classroom. After deliberating as individual teachers we meet as a grade level team to form sections that are balanced with gender, skill levels and individual needs. Our administrators review the lists several times before they are finalized. We work exceedingly hard at balancing all of these factors, and by the time we have finished we feel very strongly we have come up with classroom compositions, which will make for a successful year. Unless we have overlooked something in a student’s placement that we feel merits a change, all class assignments are final. Please let me, as well as the office, know if your child will not be returning to Beverly Cleary in the fall. This is particularly helpful information to have as we work to balance classes. For 6th ,7th , 8th ( current 5th, 6th and 7th teachers-please put in the appropriate names) Forecasting packets will soon be coming home with your student. Next year your child will have two teachers. S/he will have reading, language arts and social studies with (O’Brien, Edler or Streckert) for ½ of the day and for the second half of the day s/he will have math, science and health with (Hewig, Short, Gibson). Once the students’ forecasting sheets are returned, we will be formulating class lists for next year to determine the a.m. and p.m. class sections. Their assignment to the a.m. or p.m. block will depend on their elective selection, e.g., if your student elects to take Spanish s/he will be assigned to a p.m. block because Spanish will be offered in the morning only. Using the information from the forecasting sheet we work exceedingly hard at balancing the aforementioned factors. By the time we have finished we feel very strongly we have come up with section compositions, which will make for a successful year. Unless we have overlooked something in their section assignment that we feel merits a change, all section assignments are final. Please let us as well as the office know if your child will not be returning to Beverly Cleary in the fall. This is particularly helpful information to have as we work to balance classes. Independent Study Options Looking for ways to challenge your student? I have several ideas. If these assignments interest your child, have them see me and we will get started. I will allow class time for presentations and I will also allow students to work on their independent assignments when they finish class work with time to spare. 1. Science Blog- every week select a new science topic to blog about. You can pick famous people in science, new discoveries, current issues, astronomy. The sky is the limit so just choose something that interests you. 2. Poster presentation- Create a poster about Newton’s Laws of Physics. You can get materials and organizational ideas from your teacher. Go home, do some research and prepare your speech. You will teach the class about Newton’s Laws of Physics, you can even give examples. 3. Independent Research- choose a math or science topic of interest. Do research, read a book and write a paper. You will come to class and present your research. Instead of paper you could create a graphic novel explaining your research, or create a power point. Fourth Quarter- 4/16/12-6/13/12 Fourth Quarter has started and with that comes 5 more hours of community service. This quarter students will be receiving a homework grade. Students in the fifth grade will receive homework grades this quarter, as with 2nd and 3rd quarter. This grade reflects the students ability to turn work in on time. The reasoning behind this new addition is to help your fifth grader prepare for 6th grade. In middle school your ability to turn in your work effects your grade. Make sure to get work in on time and Parents, make sure to check your student's planner. Community Service Requirement The community service requirement begins in fifth grade and continues schoolwide 5-8 grade. First quarter students are required to fulfill five hours of community service. The process a student goes through to document their community service was discussed in class. Students can come to me and ask any questions concerning the process. This term community service is due 11/9/11. Students have five weeks to complete five hours. Community service can be a variety of activities. Due to the age of a fifth grade student the activities outside the home and neighborhood are limited. I am willing to accept any activity that you think qualifies for community service. Please ask your student about the requirement and feel free to email me with any questions. cmcmkenzi@pps.net
