Project #3 Newspaper Article
Type of book: Assigned/Historical Fiction
New Due Date: 5-11-2009
Pretend you are a newspaper reporter writing an article about one of the
important events that occurred in the book you read. Prepare a newspaper
article that includes the following:
The setting: location, date, time, people present, and any other details of
the setting that are important.
Events: Describe the events you are covering in detail. Describe them in
chronological order.
Conclusion: Summarize briefly the most important parts of your article. This
is also the place to include your ideas of lessons that might be learned from
the information in your article.
Visual: Your article should be designed to look like a real newspaper front
page, including headlines, the name of your paper, the date, and a picture
that relates to the event you are covering. The picture must also include a
caption that provides information (who, what, where, and when) about the picture.
Note: Since this is a newspaper article, concentrate on facts and
descriptions. Your opinions will be expressed through the information you
choose to include in your article.

GENERAL BOOK PROJECT INFORMATION:
BOOK PROJECTS 2008-2009
There will be three book projects this year. The reading and work for the
book projects will be done at home. Successful students will avoid
unnecessary stress by reading and working on the book projects a little each
night. Parents can help their students by providing a regular homework time,
and a quiet place to work. All books must meet appropriate choice guidelines.
Appropriate choice guidelines: An appropriate choice is: a challenging book
that you have not read before, a book that contains new vocabulary words, a
book that will take the reader at least five hours to read, a book that meets
all the requirements of the current project. Some projects will require you
to read a book of a certain type, for example: A biography, an nonfiction
book, a how-to book, etc.

Project #1 Book Cover Reports Type of book: Assigned - Nothing but the Truth
Due: 11-21-2008
For this project you will be designing an original book cover for the book you
read.The project needs to include the following:
Front cover = A full color illustration, the title, and the author’s full name.
Front inside flap = Biographical information about the author(one paragraph
minimum), the publisher, and the year the book was published.
Back inside flap = A detailed description of the main character(s), including
personality traits.
Back cover = A plot summary that will capture peoples’ attention and make them
want to read the book. You may choose to leave out the climax so as not to
give too much away for future readers.
For this project please use 11x17 inch paper. Paper will be provided in class.

Project #2 Invent - A - Chapter Type of Book: Your choice
Due: 2-3-2009 (NOTE: THIS IS A NEW DUE DATE)
Write a new chapter for the book you have read. Include the same main
character(s). Develop the main character(s) in your made up chapter using all
of the following techniques:
1) Dialog with other characters,
2) Internal dialog,
3) Other characters thoughts about the main character(s),
4) Describe the actions of your character(s).
Also: describe the setting in detail, and include:
1) At least one simile or metaphor
2) At least one example of hyperbole
3) At least three examples of Imagery
Your invented chapter could take place anywhere in the book you choose; the
end, the beginning, or in the middle. Your chapter should be between 3 and 5
pages, double spaced if typed. Your chapter should be neatly written in ink
if not typed. Try to imitate as much as possible the author’s style. Your
goal is to invent a chapter that would seem to fit naturally if added to the
book you read.

Grading:
Grading guidelines will be provided for each project prior to the due date.
Each project will be explained thoroughly in class and examples will be provided.
