The Fourth grade class will be moving through the “Teach Them Spanish” (Grade 4) work book throughout the year. Additionally, each lesson will be supplemented with a variety of songs and body kinesthetic exercises as well as Loteria (Spanish bingo) and Memorama (similar to “memory”). Students will also learn a variety of language in and around the seasons and holidays throughout the school year. Geography is generally studied in connection with various cultural lessons, which generally fall on the last Spanish class of the week. Chronologically, the students’ main areas of vocabulary and grammar are as follows; 1. Numbers 0-15 2. Greetings and Dialogue 3. Classroom Objects 4. Plurals of Nouns 5. Numbers 0-31 6. Days of the Week 7. Months and Seasons 8. Gender of Nouns 9. Definite Articles 10. Using Numbers 11. Commands and Expressions 12. Colors 13. Possessive Adjectives 14. The Body 15. The Family 16. The House 17. Diminutives 18. Mealtime 19. Numbers 0-100 20. Capital Letters 21. Holidays and Other Special Days 22. The Weather 23. The Alphabet PNA students, staff and parents have the opportunity to celebrate two primary Latino holidays; Dia de los Muertos, and Cinco de Mayo. Vocabulary, grammar, geography, songs, history, food, traditions and more is all incorporated into the preparation for both of these community celebrations. You may support your child’s Spanish class experience by bringing what we are learning in the classroom out into your personal world. Ask them what words they are studying, and if they can point to anything in the room and name in Spanish. Encourage them to use what words they know in Latino restaurants, and in front of the calendar. By fourth grade, they should easily be able to translate your family calendar (days, months, numbers, and seasons) into Spanish. More than anything, be encouraging as they gain confidence!
