Since returning to Portland from a two-year stay in Japan, Erin has kept busy
teaching English as a second language at the Berlitz Language Center,
started her own business producing candles, soaps and balms for the local
market, and as a science teacher for Mad Science. While in Japan, she worked
for the Ministry of Education in their Japanese Exchange Teaching Program.
She successfully planned and implemented English lessons to preschool, lower
school and middle school students. She designed the curriculum and lessons
for three elementary schools. She has traveled to nearly 20 countries and
brings a multicultural perspective to the classroom. Erin has a Bachelor of
Arts Degree with a major in English from Humboldt State University. In
addition to her elementary teaching qualifications, she holds a Language
Arts Credential, which allows her to teach middle and high school.
Philosophy: I work hard to create a sense of community and belonging for
each individual student in my classroom. Respect is the ultimate rule that
everyone is expected to follow. It is the child's voice that I strive to
hear above my own. I want them to constantly question their surroundings and
learn how to learn by asking questions and doing research. I hold high
standards and challenge my students. I believe in the Irish Proverb, "praise
the children and they will blossom and bloom." I promote a harmonious
environment where all feel welcome.
Erin's recommendations consistently praised her dedication, inspiration and
creativity.
