Homework

- First graders should be spending 20-30 minutes of homework each night in
addition to reading for 15 minutes.
- Students who move up for math or reading block will likely spend more time
on homework than those who stay at grade level.
- Kindergarten students may occasionally have homework but it shouldn't be
expected every night.
- If your child is spending more than 30 minutes nightly on it, please let me
know and we can work out an alternative plan.
- At the top of the page, please write how many minutes it took to complete
each assignment.

***SPELLING***
(Every week has a new list for students to study. Please see the "Spelling
List" link on this website for the list of words)
Monday: Spelling Worksheet 1
Tuesday: Spelling Worksheet 2
Wednesday: Write at least five sentences using ten of the spelling words.
Thursday: Study for the test.
Friday: Test

***READING***
Students will read for 15 minutes every night.

***MATH***
1st grade students will typically have one practice worksheet or game in
their homework folder every night. Students who move up for math or reading
block will likely spend more time on homework than those who stay at grade
level.

TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THEIR HOMEWORK
1. Find a well-lit area to work, the same place every day is usually the
best.
2. Keep supplies handy: sharpened pencils, eraser, etc.
3. Pick a homework time and be consistent.
4. Let your child do his/her own homework: it can be checked to see that
it's finished, but refrain from having them change answers to make them all
correct. The idea of homework is for me to see if they understand the skill
when working independently.
5. Make homework a priority- it needs to be more important than sports, etc.
