WELCOME!

Sixth grade at Ashland Middle School is one of the most exciting school years for many students. It is a place for working hard and playing hard. Students learn to become independent and organized. Some make lifetime friends. Our Outdoor Education program continues to be an opportunity for students to enjoy learning in the outdoors.

Bonnie, Dick, and Hillary will team teach sixth grade classes. Bonnie teaches math, Dick teaches Language Arts, and Hillary teaches science and social studies. Our team works together to create a strong sense of community and to assure each individual student’s success.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parents are essential to the success of their sixth graders. This means going online with your student to check Teacherweb and PowerSchool on a regular basis, once or twice a week at the minimum. Use both of these websites to track your child’s grades and assignments. If you notice missing assignments it’s good to catch up on the weekends. Check your student’s planner on a daily basis at the beginning of the year to help them learn to use it effectively. We hope that every parent joins us on trips and/or in the classroom at some point in the year. If you have a very busy life, just choose one way to participate this year. It is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of our content, your child and his/her friends, and this age group. Plus, it is a joy.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

In addition to using PowerSchool, Teacherweb, and student planners to ensure academic success, some students will want to take advantage of the Academic Support Center (ASC), also known as the Homework Club. James and other teacher-aides will be available before school (7:45am) and after school (until 4:00pm). Healthy snacks are encouraged (apples, popcorn, trail mix).

INC classes: Students are carefully placed based on need into “Individual Need Classes”. These classes include math support, reading and writing support, organizational skills, PE, selected Social Studies units, etc.

CLASSROOM WORK GUIDELINES

1. Full credit is given to work turned in on time; if you are absent, work needs to come in within a couple of days or it is given late credit.

2. Late work gets 75% credit, and will be scored as soon as humanly possible

3. It is important to TURN IN late work (whether you’ve been absent or not.) You can turn it in (and possibly check it) during homeroom or before/after school.

4. If you notice errors on PowerSchool, please email or call the teacher.

5. When you have questions about grades, the first thing to do is look at PowerSchool: Is there missing work? Are there low grades? Students and parents can problem-solve and then contact teachers as necessary.

6. If a student needs extra help, the options are: families, Homework Club after school, teachers before school or by appointment after school and study groups/partners.

7. Several assignments are checked by students. It is an honor system, and students report scores to the teacher. Quizzes and tests are checked by the teacher.

8. Use your Planner daily (-:

9. Should your family take an extended vacation during the school year, parents will need to provide the instruction necessary to ensure understanding and completion of assignments. As soon as possible procure a Pre-excused absence form from the Attendance Office and check Teacherweb for all assignments.

10. If a student is out sick, use Teacherweb to complete missed assignments.

11. It is very helpful to students and teachers when appointments are scheduled outside of the school day.

12. We generally do not allow assignment “redos”, however, there may by reasonable exceptions to this.

13. Extra credit options are available only after all other work is completed in a satisfactory manner.
