Third graders have been further exploring “verbs”. What it means to
be in the infinitive form, vs. a conjugated verb. We have been talking
about verb stems and endings, and the relationship between endings and
pronouns. Yeah verbs! “The ar verb song” has come into their lives to help
them memorize the endings for the regular present tense “ar” verbs.
Additionally, the “L-O-N-E-R-S song”, and the “Taco song”. Vocabulary has
been centered around the holidays. From El Día de Gracias (Thanksgiving),
to Navidad (Christmas), students have learned many new “food words”
associated with these holidays, in addition to winter weather and family
vocabulary.
Third graders have also begun conjugating AR verbs within the context
of a sentence, which requires a closer look at the subject. They have been
thinking about just who and how the subject of a sentence changes the verb
ending.
Students have been learning new vocabulary words as well. New
vocabulary words in the songs they're learning, new AR verbs, body parts,
weather, and basic expressions (Lingo Bingo!) have been keeping them quite
busy.
*At home, ask them to sing to you! They have been working on many
songs this year; see which ones they can remember out of the context of
school. Basic conversational phrases in greetings and saying goodbye are
wonderful ways to connect with their Spanish on a daily basis. Encourage
them to teach you what they know.
